Default Target Lock?

Is there some reason that sometimes it's impossible to get a lock on a target for more than a couple of seconds? I've found that once the target is within 3000 yds., it will then hold a lock. The hydrophone won't show a contact either yet the target fills my periscope screen, very annoying

I use Real Fleet Boat and RSRD and I notice that also. I think it is a feature to keep the realism a little higher.

The hydrophone/sonar thing is annoying. Hydrophones and sonar are two areas I wish were modeled a little deeper

I get the same thing. I'm not sure why. I doubt that it is a intended "realism" thing; more likely another buggy aspect of SH4.

The hydrophones thing is an old complaint. The expanation is that the sound operator's ability is a function of the equiptment (poor at the start and getting better as war progresses), but you can hear the sounds the same as if you have the best units.

I'm playing RFB 2.0 in Dec. '41 and I find my soundman (who is green, obviously), can hear ships at about 7,000yd. Even then, I have to prod him to get information. Hardly ideal.

I noticed that happening when visibility was an issue, fog or night time tracking would lose the periscope lock until you closed on the target. I was suprised at the fog because, although I could see the ship quite clearly, the game evidently thought otherwise and I would have to keep relocking the target. I now keep the "volumous fog" option on in the graphics so I can have a better idea of the weather conditions.

PS: the other obvious times are in heavy seas, when the waves keep washing over the scope and then it loses lock easily...

I just had it happen to me on my most recent contact. Seas were calm, 4kt wind, ex. visibility (according to the weather report), but it still occured. The view was somewhat "hazy" though. Of course, it stopped as I got closer.

What bothers me more, is the "shimmer" or flicker, that makes the ships masts appear to change length. That can really foul up your plotting.

This could have been the problem as the water was quite choppy. I wondered why this seemed to be random thing and finally posted here but the waves would explain it
Thanx!
