I have both mods downloaded but I currently run TMO for my first patrol with this campaign.
Which do you prefer and why? Looking for a good balance of realism and game play..

I prefer TMO because it's better.

I wouldn't say that. I'd say its just different. How i don't know, but i do know FOTRS was originally based on an earlier version of TMO. The AOTD guys built upon that, and (I think) went in their own direction, adding new ships and what not, that don't exist in TMO. I didn't add to much in the way of new units. I tended to focus on the "big picture" stuff or systemic issues, so units with new 3d models escaped me entirely.

The best answer is to get Multi-SH4 and install both. Either you will like one better or you'll end up switching back and forth a lot.

For me, the answer of "which mod" has always been very simple.

Personally, I wouldn't listen to Ducimus. It is clear that he has no idea what he is talking about.

Yeah, you're right. I've never actually played FOTRS so, couldn't make a comparison. I was just in a wisenheimer mood. I get that way once in a while.

Buggy? That may be an unwarranted critisism. But, I haven't played it for a LONG time. It had terrific grahpics.
TMO's graphics are very good too. Big difference: capabilities of TMO's dds to locate and sink a sub are SCARY GOOD, and I am talking Halloween Scary. |

TMO has been my mod of choice for quite some time, but finally for the first time, I am trying out FOTRS just to see how it is. I like the addition of a greater list of ships to shoot at. Merchants and warships both. As for it being buggy, I haven't had one issue as of yet. The issues they probably had at first was the addition of the ships that they have incorporated.
Other than the ships added, I find it to be very similar to TMO in gameplay, and all around enjoyment. And yes it is inspired and based on an earlier version of TMO. I think they also activated Midway, and Guam as sub bases. Midway is nice for early war ops, and Guam is nice in the late war period for quicker times into the combat areas.

After TMO 1.9 and Ducimus' warning about using enviornmental mods and other stuff, that can cause issues with the crew and visibility issues, I have heeded his warnings, and have had very enjoyable gameplay. Also, FOTRS is going to be getting some new ships, and reworked models for some ships, and a reworked KI-84 from what it looks like so far. So like Ducimus did with TMO, they ae refining FOTRS likewise.

I found one bug while playing FOTRS, it may not be the mods bug but it's the only place I've seen it. While sitting quietly in a harbor and waiting to get a torp off on a mechant, there was a DD cruising back & forth, problem was he was going backwards. His wake off the bow and stern was correct for going forward, howver the ship was actually moving in reverse
