Default Question about Fog and Ranges.

What are the visibility in meters of each of the levels?? (Unlimited is obvious, but moderate, and poor and such?) And has anyone ever run into pea soup type fog where you cant or can barely see the edge of your boot??

And what is the rang in meters of long medium and short range?? isnt it 20km 5km and 1km respectively or something?? Id appreciate the info

hi USNSRCaseySmith,

i whish i would run into a pea souper - i have never had fog in all the years ive been playing.....is there a Fog-Mod??

LONG RANGE: 3-15 KM
MIDDLE RANGE: 1-3 KM
SHORT RANGE: LESS THAN ONE KM.

thats what ive been working to all these years - seems about right.
cheers

The amount of fog is defined in the scene.dat file as a % of the maximum visibility, so it will vary from one mod to another. It also depends if the modder tweaked the percentages or left them untouched.

For example, in the stock game you have 8000 metres environment, so:

100% = 8000 metres
50% = 4000 metres
25% = 2000 metres
0.5% = 400 metres

But in the 16k mods (NYGM, OLC, MEP 2) this would double, for obvious reasons (16=2x8)

Then in the 20k environment mods (MEP 3, Unofficial 20km for GWX)

100% = 20000 metres
50% = 10000 metres
25% = 5000 metres
0.5% = 1000 metres

Got it?

Yessir! Thanks Hitman! Every time I get fog Im always dissapointed because to me it doesnt really feel like fog. Its only when its raining / storming out do I seem to get it! I wish I got it on a calm day with absolutely no visibility or something like that. At least early war

Default Low visibility hunting

I tracked a merchant going "medium" that turned out to be a steenkin' pelagic trawler in my last mission using hydrophones for a loooong time. Plan was to follow until I got behind it on its true median course. Finally, I knew I was right on it when the bearing changes came very quickly. Went to Uzo and discovered that I could see it in the fog as a silhouette a few hundred meters before my full-efficiency watch crew could see it. Visibility to my crew turned out to be ~ 385m.

no Hitman, i have'nt got it!

are you saying there is a mod for fog or are you saying we can achieve this ourselves by adjusting the values in the scene.dat files

...i would like to ecounter a pea soup'er know and again or make them more common in a flat calm sea - so, how is this achievable, if it can be done ?
cheers

The amoutn of visibility for each fog state is encoded in the scene.dat, and you can tweak it with Silent Editor easily. But it is not an absolute number, instead it is a % of the maximum visibility. Hence it will depend on which environment mod you have installed.

Of course you can make pea soup appear, in fact it is already encoded for the worst fog state. Only it will appear in seldom conditions, and unfortunately not tied to calm seas.

IS there any way to make it work on calm seas?? or does it have to be tied to rough ones???

No success yet trying that, thick fog seems tied to stormy weather in general, but I have experienced at least once the fog with calm seas. It's just a very seldom occurence
