Default Graphic problems and crashes

Hi,
installed the sim two times, run the patched 1.2 version with the "TDW MegaMod", "Grossdeutscher Rundfunk" and Trevally's "get range and speed mod".
The sim crashes often, mostly at high time compression or near the harbour, but not always - sometimes it just happens out of the blue.
Running the sim on an Asus P5K board, e8400 dual core (2x3GHz), 4Gb Ram, and an Nvidia 9800GT with 1Gb; with Win 7 ultimate 32 bit.

There are all kinds of graphical glitches as well, one of those being:

Anyone else have this ? Or anything someone could do about it ?

Thanks and greetings,
Catfish

I have nothing like that so its either a corrupted install of the game\mods or your system isnt good enough to run the game with the mods .

Default Graphic Problems

Try upping your 'AA' settings. Failing that, 'Alt/Tab out and in again, I've had this on other games and have resolved it by one or other of the above.

Hello,
thanks, will try this, however i thougth to raise the AA settings would put more load on the system - but sometimes there are some strange reactions i know.

May as well be the card is too weak for SH5, well as long as a 280 GTX costs more than 300 bucks i refrain.

Thanks and greetings,
Catfish

Hey Catfish.... does the game run smoothly with NO mods installed?

Before I got the mod dialed in and figured out what was what, TDW's Magnum Opus threw some pretty crazy graphical glitches at me... some unplayable. The game would lock up and freeze - but never kick me out and CTD.

Good luck with it.

Got this problem too and I strongly suspect Enviro Mod to be the cause. But I love that mod too much, so I usually Alt-Tab first to try fix the glitch and if not works.. load/save game.

Read this and enable the 3GB switch (it's the same problem on Windows7 32 bit)
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...ght=3gb+switch

I'm more than sure it's (part of) the problem, especially since it happens near harbors.

Quoting you from that topic:

The 3GB switch won't do anything performance-wise. It will just avoid errors and crashes when SH5 runs out of "memory" (addressing space actually).
And it will only matter for 32 bit systems.

Even though you only have 2GB RAM, the 3GB switch refers to _virtual memory_, not physical memory. So you can enable the 3GB switch even with 1 GB of RAM, it will help.

If you have windows vista/7, the more video RAM you have, the more your harbors will disappear ! (as paradoxical as it can be....)
That's because the video card memory uses the same 2GB of virtual memory as the game uses, so you will have less memory for the game.

As a conclusion, this will only avoid errors/crashes, and only works on 32bit systems (with more positive impact for vista/win7 uses).
I have this problem a lot, harbor that disappear then the UI start to look exactly like it shown in the first post followed soon by a crash.

Now the question is, which option is better.. to mess with the OS ini file or do what TDW sugest here ?

Hello,
well this is better help than "format your harddrive and re-install" lol

Ok, i have set the Win32 parameters to use more than 2 Gb via command line, and edited the SH5.exe with the Explorer suite mentined by TDW, to make the sim make use of that - will try it out and report back.

Thanks and greetings,
Catfish

The .ini file enables the 3gb switch for all executables, whereas TDW's solution only applies to SH5.exe, therefore TDW's solution is better (haven't tested it though, I wish I would have known about it a longer time ago).

Hello TDW, Pintea and those others who helped -

i am running the sim now without stuttering, and without CTDs.

THANKS !

I just did what TDW had proposed, and what Pintea mentioned:
Download the "Explorer Suite", open the SH5.exe file (after having made a backup) and found that the sim file was already set to use more than 2 Gb - so i just closed it without changing.

Next i typed those commands in the command line, so that Win 7 32 bit would allow the use of 3 Gb generally, and restarted just to make sure.

Started the sim, saved, loaded, played for 6+ hours without any CTD, all the time alt-tabbing in and out of the sim to open documents or surf the web, only to go back to the running SH5 without problem.

There is one small problem which i had before - the small "notepad" or what's it called at the lower right vanishes after some time, and i can only bring up the big messages window after this to read answers or ackonwledged orders - but nothing to do with the CTD or anything.

Much thanks and greetings,
Catfish

P.S. also installed that antilag thingie mentioned by TDW - also helped against lagging-
P.P.S the "white-out" rectangles on the menu bars as shown in the screenshot in post #1 are also a thing of the past.

can you show screenshots of this small 'notepad' and big messages window? What makes it vanish?

Are you experience any problem with your rig after these changes? Like framedrop in other games, crashing applications nor movies not playing well?
