Default To say hello, thanks and ask a question...

Hi,

I just bought Silent Hunter 3 (for peanuts off Amazon) and this site probably saved me a lot of time and hassle.

I bought a new PC a couple of months ago - nothing super flashy but adequate. Ordered SH3 a couple of days ago.

Luckily I checked online whether it was compatible with Windows 7 64-bit and found this site, warnings about the Starforce problems and the workarounds.

Got the game yesterday and with minimal hassle got it all running smooth as you like, no Starforce, and with GWX3 installed as well. Awesome.

And so my question.... What's the gramaphone for? Is it just so I can listen to some jazz while cruising the North Sea or is there some other purpose behind it?

Welcome aboard

The gramophone is just to listen to music. If you don't like what's stock on there then there are some downloads from here that include much more music, albeit still from the '30s and '40s.

I don't usually listen to anything apart from the band as I set sail

IIRC the stock game comes with one mp3 file in the Gram folder, GWX gives you a couple dozen or so ogg files.

But you don't have to listen to any of it if you don't like it. You can do what you like with the Gramophone folder: take files out for tracks you don't like, add files in for stuff you do want to hear.

In-game it will play both mp3 and ogg files, altho the general consensus seems to be that ogg files are more stable and work better. I've also heard that whichever file type you choose, you should stick with one or the other and not mix 'em up.

If you want to be realistic you can stick with only stuff that would've been historically available at the time, or you can just throw whatever you like in there and pretend your radio operator was a time traveler in his pre-Kriegsmarine career.

There is tons of historical stuff available in the Downloads section here, in the SH3 Sound Mods section. Everything from period music to archival radio broadcasts.

Thanks guys.

I thought the gramaphone might have had some cunning historical use involving enemy hydrophones or sonar or something, but clearly it's just so I can listens to Ella Fitzgerald. Doh!

No, it's so you can listen to Rina Ketty, not some evil American jazz singer.

WELCOME ABOARD!

I listen to old radio broadcasts, Amos and Andy, Abbott and Costello, the Great Gildersleeve and (hush!) The Goldbergs.

Not realistic but I tell myself it is so I can fit in when I am sent undercover into the USA.

That would be pretty hard....the enemy can't hear your gramaphone playing ingame.
