Default Bought this a week ago...

Published in 1942 it contains some of the official history of the RAN in WWII as well as stories written by serving officers and men. There are also quite a few photo's, paintings as well as some cartoons obviously drawn by sailors. I've been reading about the RAN's preparations for WWII and some of the first actions they were involved in. There is quite a bit about the Med campaign obviously but also some very interesting stuff about armed merchants against German surface raiders in the Indian Ocean.

Picked it up for AU$10 at a market stall.

It was the only RAN book he had. The others on the stall were RAAF and Army books from the same period.

They were published by the Australian War Memorial during the war as part of the local propaganda campaign to encourage enlistment in the services.

Also look for:

H.M.A.S. Mk. II (red white and blue cover - 1943)
H.M.A.S. Mk. III (light blue cover with red writing - 1944)
H.M.A.S. Mk. IV (yellow and blue cover - 1945)

Similar style.

They pop up on ebay regularly for around $20 or so (although the above set sold for $9 recently).

Cheers I'll keep an eye out. Never been keen on ebay myself, but sometimes you do see some stuff worth grabbing.
