Jerry Brown sworn in as new California governor

Jerry Brown has been sworn in as the new governor of the US state of California, taking over from the departing Arnold Schwarzenegger.Mr Brown, a Democrat who also served as California's governor from 1975 to 1983, will be only the second person to lead the state for three terms.He said the year ahead would "demand courage and sacrifice" if California was to overcome its fiscal problems.Among his first tasks will be to present a new budget plan.The state faces a $28bn (£18bn) budget shortfall over the next 18 months.Voters may be asked to agree to the extension of temporary taxes that were brought in in 2009 and are due to expire in July.

Jerry Brown was a good gov back when I was in California in the late 70's. I don't know how he was his last term as I had scooted out of state by then.

In any case, it will be an improvement on Arnold, who was a big disappointment for me.

The whole proposition system needs to go. Special interests pull money this way and that via propositions that can only be repealed through a vote of the people; and there's really not much an elected official can do about that. That situation as i understand it, along with other contributing factors, makes the state neigh ungovernable.

Speaking of propositions... wasn't Jerry Brown behind Prop 13, or not ? Prop 13 in itself, is a thorny subject, and is according to some sources, one of the biggest reasons why california has become ungovernable.

How much of the problem are the public employee unions? 1 in 6 in ore-gone are employed by gov't. Too many people here have their noses in the trough and they will never reform it.

Posting this, because i love ragging on my home state, and take every opportunity to do so. That and my listed location isn't something i just made up (though i did combine the existing nickname "cantaffordya" with the other nickname of "peoples republic")
