Default speed of merchants/convoys

Seems like speed of merchants is typically at least 10 knots. Was this historically accurate in the pacific? makes it tough to catch em if you have an s boat.

sh3 merchants are usually 7 knots.

7, knots of average speed, litte less in bad weather, while some tankers had higher speed

Depends on mods. With RSRD speeds will vary often changing with course changes.

Usually
slow is 6kts
medium is 9kts
fast is 12 kts..

But it can vary greatly with RSRD. I've seen many convoys going 14-17kts.

The convoy will usually travel at a speed that accommodates the slowest ship in the group. If, you can identify that ship and leave it for last, it should accommodate your ambush.

I agree with the above. If possible, leave the "slow movers" last.

Welcome to the dilemma of every WWII sub commander. They watched many more targets get away than they were able to engage. With S-Boats that went double!

I assume you mean the convoy can go no faster than the slowest ship max speed. Seldom doe's a convoy travel at the fastest speed of the slowest ship. Even the slowest ship can hit 12kts....Still, you can't trust that, if you attack a group, the entire group will go into different speeds until they regroup and head off. A small merchant fastest speed may be 12 kts, but often you'll see another merchant blow right by it to regroup.

However, once they regroup, they usually settle on a constant speed, but usually a slower speed than before. Seldom have I ever seen a convoy take off at the max speed of the slowest ship. Ships actually do know how to pour on speed to regroup. Course the escorts aren't effected by the slowest speed, they'll come at ya full blast.

Everything you just explained was on my mind when I posted. That's why I used the keyword "accommodate". Every convoy will go into a zig pattern after the initial mayhem of having them scatter every which way and, I have yet to see a convoy travel at the top speed of the slowest ship. I thought even the noobs would be aware of that and that's why I didn't go into geater detail. Oh yeah, I hate typing too. I do it all day long at work and the best part of it is, I'm a terrible typist. Constantly have to edit and correct my post.
