SJ radar is available but im not allowed to install it

just finished a patrol with my porpoise in 1942, returning back to port at freemantle, australia. among the cutscene messages i recieved were a couple of medals and an option to take one of the new subs that just rolled off the assembly line. i took the sub.. it was a Gato.

strangely after watching the war update cinematic i found myself back at pearl harbor without requesting a transfer from the asiatic fleet.. no big deal. i tried a reload where i denied the Gato and ended up at pearl anyway.

so, after taking the gato and going into the upgrade section i find that SJ and SJ-1 surface radar is now available. at the cost of 500 renown it was to be my first purchase using my 3100 saved renown. however, despite the empty surface radar slot on my sub i was not allowed to purchase either radar upgrade. attempting to do so will get me a message saying that my sub cant equip that upgrade package.

suspecting a bug, i reloaded and went through it again. same result. i also tried reloading and refusing to take the gato. in that case i AM allowed to purchase either radar for my porpoise.

there arent any real game stats available for these ships but i know that any version of the Gato should be able to mount radar. ive even seen it first hand in one sub school mission.

i think theres obviously a problem here. i just dont know what. maybe i have to complete a patrol with it first? that wouldnt really make sense though.

also, i had to repurchase all of the upgrades i had already on my porpoise. (guns, SD radar, etc.) but i guess that is to be expected.

anyone have any ideas?

oddly, i did one patrol and when i got back to port i was able to install SJ radar but SJ-1 radar was no longer an option.

some kind of bug i guess
