[REQ] Rat Simulator Required!

I came across a brilliant web page titled 'TOM PAINE'S JOURNAL', Tom was a US submariner responsible for taking possession of Japan's i-400 underwater aircraft carrier submarine at the end of the war and sailing it to the US for examination. There are some fabulous stories here but the one I like was when the Navies Health Safety officers stopped them from departing due to the disgusting state of the submarine, here's a quote:-

After she was taken over from the Japanese on her way home from patrol you can imagine that the I-400 required a massive clean-up from stem to stern. The field day started with all hands moving aboard the U.S.S. Proteus, after which cylinders of fumigating gas were opened in every compartment and the boat sealed. Next morning bushel after bushel of dead rats and cockroaches were swept up. I'd noted with some revulsion on the Ha-boats the occasional rat leaping through a hatch from compartment to compartment, and hordes of scurrying roaches when a light was switched on, but I'd no idea that these boats carried so many verminous shipmates on patrol. If the I-400 had been rigged for dive when the rats and roaches were thrown overboard the Diving Officer would have had to order: Flood two hundred pounds to Auxiliary Tank from sea.

These Jap subs were huge carrying 3 airplanes and having a displacement of 6.500 tonnes, I highly recommend this fascinating article:-

Theres an I-400 being worked on for SH4. Not sure of the state though

Wolfgang Ott's 1957 novel, Sharks and Little Fish, mentions having cockroachs as sailing companions in the U-Boats too. Maybe a few scurrying around mess would add to the immersion, with a rat or two in the engine room.

Some simple animation work could be done to put rats and roaches
on the U-Boats.

That could be an epic mod!

Is there a mod to kill them?

Perhaps as the food in the control room disappears, the rats could get bigger - or atleast more frequently seen.

@jahsavage: Intersting article indeed. These subs were intended to launch air-attacks on the mainland USA. I find all these odd-ball subs - the "Cruiser" subs, and tanker subs, and mini subs, and even aircraft-carrier subs facinating. Thanks for that link .

Damn, doing a firing solution is already a jumpy thing. Imagine a roach running up your leg just as you pressed "Fire."

How long do you think a rat could survive inside an empty torpedo tube? I mean, it's not like you're going to crush it if you have no more torpedoes to load.

Well they were tougher back then, they had to deal with a lot worse than that.

I can see it now... you're a rat sitting in the tube, but the sub is under attack so they decide to jettison some stuff from the sub to fake a death, but you happen to be in the tube... you then find yourself swimming for your life at fifteen meters

Don't care how tough they were. They're naval guys, not used to bugs as much as say the infantry. And there's still a natural aversion to creepy crawly things.

I don't know much about WWII or todays Infantry,
but I damned well know from my days,
that Rat and Snake were viewed as a higher food class then MRE.
Kind of like chicken,
With Rat or Snake sauce.

I would actually prefer the MRE to rat.

I'm a nutcase like that. (My friends think I'm a nutcase for attempting to find an actual MRE in the first place.)

But in reality, bugs are nice sources of protein, if only bitter. Those cockroaches might be useful if an attack destroys the bacon hanging from the ceiling.

MRE's are easy to find.

Join the Military and you can have all you want!

They still had C-Rats in the '80's dated to WWII!

Survival websites and most outdoor supply sites have MRE's for sale. They're actually not a bad thing to keep in your car, along with your other survival gear, if you live in an area where you may get stranded easy.
