Default New players first impression.

Yeah, ok. Looks nice, when it remembers your settings. I don't have the most powerful or up to date PC, and it still runs just fine. My last one was SH3, and to be honest I don't see a massive difference at this time. I do like the addition of crew wandering the decks, or in some cases vibrating alarmingly while stuck in place.

Gameplay-wise, I'm not as thrilled. The addition of very specific missions to try and introduce some sort of narrative only restricts the gameplay and adds nothing. I liked SH3's 'patrol grid XX:XX' style, and updates becoming available at the time they historically would have. Much more open ended with more replay value. Also the scaling between simplistic and mind bending difficulty is pretty severe, one being point and click, the other requiring so many mouse clicks and menu selections that by the time your finished the ship is gone.

Bugs? Damn! SH3 had it's share, but they really pushed the boat out for this version. Currently I am setting up a convoy attack, but then found my settings set to manual TDC because it won't save my preferences. When I switch off the TDC however, I also 'switch off' the convoy! The ships vanish completely, only showing up on hydrphone. Bizarre.

All in all I'm happy to have the game and hope to fix it with mods. I'm also happy I waited until now to buy it, and that I got it for a tenner rather than full price.

YeeHaa!....... finally got a PC that will run SH5!.
Can anyone suggest the better mod's at all, theres so many threads to check out.

First impressions are great graphics, just about got my head around how to fire torps - accurately that is.
I'm finding it difficult identifying ships unless your on top of them but practice makes perfect.... unless you zoom over on ext cam that is.
Anyway, spotted a thread on not being able to dive when your on the bridge so off to check it out............ find it difficult to believe you cant scream ALAAAAARM! and dive without the skipper having to get halfway down the ladder first.

+Great graphic
+Pretty nice walking around in the sub, chatting with crew. I also like the leadership value. I feel more integrated in a task and my contribution is more vital then in previous game.
+You get the sense how it must have been living on a german submarine.

That is pretty much it...

-I can´t tell you how much i miss well, for starters, Type IIA/IID, IX/IXB/IXC. Which moron came up with the idea: "Well, given that VII were the most used type in the war, let´s skip the others". Smells "lets-hurry-up-the-release" then anything. And then i haven´t even mentioned all the bugs.

Given that pretty much every other avaible Uboat-type is missing results that i don´t feel part in the bigger perspective that is the Battle of Atlantic.

-Tons of pointing, new key settings, menu settings and klicking, add to that the non-describing that is the so called "manual" (which in fact is a pamphlet), not good.

-The 1939 to 1943-fanatism from Ubisoft. Can anyone tell these guys that the war ended in 1945? Just because Kriegsmarine theoretically and practical lost the war and control of the oceans in, let´s say -43, doesn´t mean their war ended and everyone packed up and traveled home. Two more years of fighting and hoping is much when you like a game.

-I miss the freedom that was SH3 (and more so with GWX).

-Bugs high and low. You think that SH3, with all its fair share of trouble, was an "unfortunate in the business", but yet SH5 some years later, is EVEN WORSE. Unforgivable.

But, i see the potential, and the next couple of years, maybe it´s full potential will shine. Thanks to dedicated gamers.

I have to admit I only bought it once it reached a tenner as well, there was no way I was paying full price for such dodgy software. It also gave the modders time to get the worst of it sorted, and for patches to be released for the worst of the issues. Still, there are issues that irk me, and they're not all bugs. The TDC system sucks for a start, and that's the most important part of the game. The crew morale nonsense also does my head in. I don't mind promoting and training, but fireside chats and gossip I don't need.

I am now at the stage where SH5 has awoken my love for the sub sim, but I'm missing the relatively greater scope and freedom of SH3. The only advantage SH5 has is it's better graphics, and frankly that's not much. Without direct side by side comparison I have to say I don't see much of a difference. Ships all look pretty much alike through the scope, you are rarely close enough to make out crewmen, and the sea looks pretty much the same.

I think I'll give SH5 a few more days, then install 3 again with a mass of mods to see which I prefer.

Have to agree, SH3 and 4 are nunya without mods also. But they did give us more to work with this time, and yes better graphics work for me.

I am running many mods now, environment 4.5 and the full interior mod amongst them. It all helps, but it's not so amazing that it makes SH3 look like Pong. Certainly not SH3 with mods added. .

I'm not boasting about anything, I have no hidden agenda, I'm just telling you my first impressions of SH5 now that I have bought it. That impression is "it's better looking but with even more flaws". The difference in graphics is not massive, hence my comment saying that SH5 is not so amazing that it makes SH3 obsolete (like Pong). I cannot comment on SH4 as I have never owned it and have little interest in it, preferring the more intense struggle of the Battle of the Atlantic.

I would suggest that your English, while it appears quite good, is maybe not up to the task of picking up the tone of the post correctly. I'm just giving my honest opinion on some software.

In MMORPG is a term: "go back to WoW". Here is something like "go back to SH3".
