But the robot just copies the human expressions recorded by the camera. That's still a long way from genuinely creating its own expressions depending on the situation.

Yep with today's technology it probably is possible. But unless somebody creates a good algorithm, the hardware alone doesn't matter.
I mean, we aren't even able yet to create programs that even speak a human language fluently

(see google translate). How are we gonna create robots that respond in a human manner to different situations?
