Default Trying out Dead is Dead play

I decided that I needed to start playing as Dead is Dead, but man it can be frustrating.

My first try I got some good hits my first patrol, then went out and got sunk on the second. Was moving to a second patrol zone under heavy TC and got bombed out of the water by a plane.

Second one I didn't even get to the first patrol zone before a plane knocked me out of TC and sunk me.

Gah.

Used to be, that kinda crap happened, I'd just load up. Now I have to start from scratch.

Dead is Dead will certainly give you a new appreciation of total Situation Awareness (SA). Not to mention teach you judicious use of TC.

I play DiD too, it adds alot to the game if your choices can cause you to start all over again. But whats up with the planes? Usually my Radar detects them and takes me outta TC with plenty of time to dive. What mods are you using?

I always play DiD. Loading a savegame is killing the immersion for me.

Ah yeah, the underwater detection by planes can be an issue, although this is true only of mods which allow planes to detect you underwater (TMO, OM, not sure if RFB also does this). In default game, this does not happen. My tip: either go very deep, or keep your periscope+radar out while cruising underwater. Unless you have a way of detecting the planes above you, the TC will not go to 1x until you take damage. In TMO, I believe planes can see down to 60ft, although only from a limited range. In late-war Operation Monsoon play, this gets VERY tough as the planes have ways to hit you up to 100m depth (I presume a simulation of MAD gear and/or FIDO torpedoes). But you just deal with that I guess...

That's a good word. I like that NorthBeach.
Playing DiD certainly does one thing for me. It behooves me to make sure I don't take any foolish chances and get myself killed. It certainly turned me into one cautious skipper.

I use to play that way either until I finished a career or got killed, only saves I kept were base saves. I once made it to late 44, a lot of patrols.
I was gonna take it easy and finish the war out just so I knew I did it once. Close to two years ago and never forget being sunk in Formosa by a Type AB. Hate that I went there. So, I loaded up a base save and finally saw the end of the war. That career was cams and contacts off...so close.

I don't have it in me anymore, but I really don't play that way anymore, I'll do about 4-7 patrols and start over. When I get my mods right and hopefully a TMO version for the radar mod and a few more tweaks by tater to the sensors, I'm gonna give it another go. If I play DiD, only meaningful if I do it totally real with cams and contacts off., but that's me.
