{Just saw I spelled partial wrong, but don't know how to edit a title..anyone know how, the mods forum has a delete option, but can't find one here.
Subject often talked about and we've often seen SS's with the sun and moon close, someone may have some better than these, but thought I would bring up this old subject. I doubt many care, but the moon phases are fairly accurate in the game. Now understand I'm no pro, just a novice. First thing I did was pull moon phase schedules for the time period, obvious that's a must. Another factor is longitude and latitude and the correct times zones, but I checked several weeks. I pulled the moon phase schedule for July 1943 and followed for a week. If it called for a full moon, a full moon was there, all the moon phases were correct for location. So I got to thinking about those SS's people have posted with sun and moon close and wondered if it was an goof, I don't think so. So what about an eclipse. Obvious the biggest factor is the game itself, rendering both sun and moon in daylight. I doubt you'll see the moon in the middle of the day, but dang close. I pulled the eclipse schedule off the net, got the best lat/long available for the best GE, then comes time. Time is what is tricky, even though you have a best day, being at the right place helps. I wouldn't say these SS are exact eclipses. I did look in the sky during the day for the eclipse at the right time, however, based on where you are an eclipse can be over the horizon, so after some work I figured a better time and location to catch them on the horizon so the games graphics will render. I tracked two, takes a lot of work. Here we go, first eclipse near Australia. Can't see much, but it's there. It amazed me the things you can't see until you look very hard through your binocs, a glare, imperfection. I'm sure I'll have to correct some of the SS, and get them in the proper order, probably be duplicates or SS very close. I'll clean it up after I see how it post. ![]() Getting better ![]() Closer look, top right ![]() Just shots, no real order now, ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Later stage, moon bottom right. ![]() Here is a different one near Antarctica . I don't think my eyes were fooling me. This one was higher in the horizon closer to the correct time. This one's on the left side. All you can see is a faint outline, but certainly more of an eclipse. ![]() Last edited by Armistead; 10-15-10 at 12:28 AM. |

Should be a new moon

Hehe, what makes you think it's not a new moon, not that I know anything about them? Don't they just mark the first day and usually a cresent? I guess technically they can't be seen, except for an eclipse shadow, but reading a cresent can sometimes be seen with an eclipse on the horizon. Obvious both moon and sun set together. I only know what little I've been reading., but enough for a game eh. However, not that it's much of a SS, but that last shot with the binocs with moon to the left, pretty dang close.
Not many to look for. The only other one I tried to find when I did this was the eclipse in Feb 04 between Midway and Attu. Still did get in range, but would have to find a better horizon position and had enough of doing that. ![]() I loaded the program for celestial navigation that removes your sub icon, ect..amazing program and fun, but it becomes the whole focus of the game, not sure I can hang with it long, not smart enough and running into land is getting old...but for a game was surprised you can find them within the correct time period. I'm not trying to be an ass, BTW, I just can't help it with astronomy stuff
![]() Probably like a "regular" person having to sit and watch a submarine movie with any of us in the room ![]() "It's supposed to be the day after Pearl Harbor, and that paint measure was not adopted til mid '42! WTF were they thinking!" |

Never thought you were.. ![]() I've seen several SS in the past of so called eclipses, so went looking . Overall the game fails in celestial aspects, but for the periods I tested the moon phase for full moons, each time was correct. Even though they're improper SS's for the eclipse, rather amazing that the 2 I looked for took place at the right time and location. The total eclipse up north obvious isn't going to show up, but the phase time was fairly close. The last shot of just the haze in the binocs is a fairly amazing SS to me and I would think closer to how an eclipse would appear. I would've never seen it had I not been looking. Why rendering is incorrect, still fairly amazing that the eclipses showed up at the proper time and location, a fluke, possible. Be interesting if people have SS's of eclipses taking place at incorrect times. When you get laid up in bed, it's amazing what boredom will make you do....
