Default Report U-99 Aug-1940

While heading to Rockall Bank in my trusty VIIC U-99 at grid AM13 I get jumped by a couple of Swordfish.

I pull the plug and level off at 50 meters while turning 20 degrees to port.

Low and behold I get a strong contact port astern. Go to Peri depth and take a looksee. YIKES !!!

It's an Illustrious Class Carrier all by it's lonesome staying on a steady course.

Come to Papa. I sit holding my breath and white knuckled with, my finger hovering over thte FIRE button.

At 90 degrees and 800 mtrs I let all 4 eels go.

23,000 tons End of story. Scratch one carrier.

A while later on the surface I spot another Swordfish. Hope he's got plenty of fuel cause, there ain't no place to land out here anymore.

Now off to Rockall Bank.

Weiter so, Herr Kaleu!
Congratulations! I wonder what she's doing out there, alone, I don't have so much luck with capital ships and carriers . I only meet the big ones with a rat tail of escorts in company, right now I'm shadowing a slow cruising Bogue with "only" 4 oder 5 destroyers by it's side, south of Iceland. Wish me luck

Wow, Christmas came early for you!

I've never seen an unescorted capital ship, but I do run across them in TFs and convoys early in the war. Especially (it seems) in the Hebrides Strait and the northern approaches to Loch Ewe, and down in Tanker Alley.

Rodney appears in a very target rich convoy that sometimes spawns around 9 September 1939 in BF14.

And Hood, with an Illustrious carrier in tow, seems to like approaching Gibraltar in CG95 in late June 1940.

Both are surprisingly lightly escorted.

No need to go rushing down there; they don't always (or usually) spawn, as far as I know, but if you are in the area already....

This is in GWX 3.0, of course.

Thx Guys Xmas sure did come early. Alg convy did come thru Rockall Bank.

Right smack in the middle was a Rodney and a Lg Tanker.

Put two into each for an extra 30,000 tons. Slowed down a Lg merchant with the stern pooper.

I decided not to get greedy and am sneaking away. Curious to see the renoun I get.

I play with everything ticked but, F12.

Rockall Banks is a great place to find battleships early in the war.

Now off to Rockall Bank.

2 Patrols ago was travelling East of Scapa on heading 030 and kept getting constantly harrassed by Swordfish. Shot the first one down, then the next one, then they started sending pairs. Thanks to my crack AI gunner he managed to shoot them all down before I took any hits; luckily it was dusk so when they sent 3 at once I dove and just sat there and waited for it to get dark.

Being close to Scapa I went in through the West opening and found the problem, an Illustrious class carrier was parked there along with an Aux. Cruiser. Not nearly the same satisfaction of sinking a warship at sea it felt great to get back at that constant thorn that pestered me all evening.

The spelling Nazi in me forces me to state that it is "Lo and behold." Sorry, I just couldn't help myself.

Congratulations! The first time you nail a carrier is even better than nailing your first battleship. It is so satisfying to know that those planes won't be bothering you or your comrades any more. Well done!

Swordfish traffic is always the giveaway there is a carrier somewhere in the vicinity.

A lone carrier? With no escort?
How can I have just a little bit of your luck?
Nice work there!

I have yet to find any capital ships But I did have a patrol grid up around Norway, and when I departed for patrol, I found a friendly task force (The KM Admiral Hipper with 4 destroyer escorts heading that way) So I followed her thinking that she would be going to maybe encounter another small task force and I could lend some 'assistance' I gave up after a while though.
