Just reinstalled Jane's Fleet Command

So I finally found an XP installer for FC, and after installing it and setting compatibility to Win98, I was able to dive back into the world of large-scale naval warfare. Launched the first campaign mission, but got bored and quit. Did successfully shoot down two Russian bombers trying to kill my North Sea carrier battle group in a ridiculously short and easy Single Mission, though.

Will be fun to have this game during downtime at folk high school. She's strictly speaking not a gaming computer, and the only other title I have installed is Dominions 3 (a smashing game, by the way).

By the way, I love looking at the system requirements of old games:

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  • Windows 95 or Windows 98.
  • DirectX 6
  • Pentium 200Mhz, or faster Intel processor (A Pentium II 300Mhz or faster CPU is recommended).
  • 32 MB of RAM (64 MB of RAM is recommended, especially for Multiplayer hosting).
  • 3D graphics accelerator required. Must be compatible with one of the following: Glide 2.43 (Voodoo I and Voodoo Rush); Glide 2.5 (Voodoo II); or Direct3D. Please see list of supported chipsets (below).

I brought this for a fiver on auction site & gave up when I could never get this game to run on XP, now I know why all I needed was a damn xp installer.

ya i no rite?
Just dug it up and tried to install it on my XP machine, no luck. Did a google search for ""Fleet Commander"+XP", all I got was forum threads telling me it was impossible to run it on XP because the OS lacked some critical DOS programming or whatever. It was only when I read the Wikipedia article on the game out of curiousity that I happened to find out it was not only possible, but ridiculously easy to get it to run on post-98 Windows. All you need to do is indeed just put the CD in your CD drive, download the XP installer from the link you get in the wikipedia article, and use it to install the game. Oh,and you'll also have to set compatibility to Win98, but that's not a major hurdle.

Have fun playing, it's a special kind of feeling to have a whole carrier battle group at your command. "Enemy airfield surrounded by SAM sites hundreds of nautical miles away... okay, fine, Destroyer Thisandthat, launch a volley of long-range missiles" :some time afterwards the airfield is reduced to a crater:. Lovely.

Steam offers it for €20,-, but you might dig up a physical copy for less on Amazon.

Also, Steam has 688(I) Hunter/Killer, Fleet Command, Sub Command bundled for the same price, €30,- for that + DW.

FleetCommand Must Have\Use\Know\Get

http://forums.navalwarfare.org/showt...-AND-DOWNLOADS

or:

http://yhst-12000246778232.stores.ya...etcommand.html

this will solve your xp problems, and one you get it all up and running, there's plenty of cool senario's to use.

one word of advice, even in winxp format, I'd save your game every 10 min or so, it seems to lockup during intense battles!!!

These Guys do a great job in aftermarket support for a great Game.

Thanks for that SpenceMac. With the AU$ riding near parity with the US$ I don;t mind buying stuff online from the US at the moment.

I would love to play Janes WWII Fighter Aircraft again. This was the game that got me started on simulation play. Good times with that game.

Lots of fun so far. Intense action with a lot of atmosphere, even though all you're really doing is directing icons around a low-graphics 2D map. My only gripe is that you can't set time compression to higher than 4x. Makes sense for the game's age, but one wonders why game designers never seem to go, "hey, you know, this one might just become a classic that's still played a decade from now, why can't we implement this and that feature for future players to make use of?". Staring at the screen for five minutes waiting for a strike package, cruise missile, or rescue chopper to reach its objective can be tiring.

My biggest gripe was the excessive number of engine failures on take-off from the carriers. It didn't happen all of the time, but once I lost every one of my F-18s one after the next.

Yeah, lot's of "cold cat". Think it helped to space launches further apart; have 1 flight on deck on ready 5 and next flight on ready 15. Set first to launch and then move other flight to ready 5. Tedious, but no cold cat problem.

Am I the only one that can't retrieve aircraft in the first campaign mission? They just circle behind the carrier untill they run out of fuel.

Just had that happen to me, too. Was playing the Shore Bombardment mission and ordered my two harriers to RTB once the mission was accomplished. They refused to land on the carrier. The Super Cobra I had launched touched down just fine, but the Harriers just circled like idiots. Tried stopping the carrier, cancelling and resetting the RTB orders, nothing worked.

Had another strange one happen to me in the Strike Back mission. The enemy had a command center remaining and I tasked the units with air-to-ground weapons (Super Cobras and warships) to take it out. They'd acknowledge the order, eagerly move within range, and then break off and head off with their backs to the target without firing as much as a cannon round. Damned bizarre.
