I am thinking that if this were true, there would be some mention in other more academic references.

Just remember what the term "expert" means. It comes from the melding of two terms

X - meaning an unknown

Spurt - meaning a drip under pressure

Expert - an unknown drip under pressure.

That has to be one of the worst Photoshop jobs I've seen in a while. The blurry edges of the angel she's holding is a dead give away.

I scoured the article looking for disclamers and such. The only impression is that they carved the statue themselves out of a rock.

Good catch on the imageshack I did not notice that.
