Default U-553 has failed to report..

Jan 9th, -44. 1435. South of The Rockals.

The convoy was big, and well defended, and was coming straight at us.
Attacking convoys in -44 is a bad idea, but diving deep and hope to go unnoticed or surface and run the other way, no we have to attack.
Stay close to the surface at 1 knot. Head on, past the lead escorts..
Scope up and a quick look, scope down. There´s a Bouge carrier and an large merchant in good positions. Wait for it. Scope up, fire 3 and 4 at the Bogue and 1 and 2 at the merchant all set for magnetic.
Scope down and start to dive, slowly. Keep heading under the convoy.
Torpedo treffe, all 4 hits. Speed up and go deep. Back to 1 knot and silent running. Both ships are sinking.
But now we have 4 escort trying to find us. No 5 or 6 escorts..
For more then 2 full hours we endure pinging and depth charges. We are forced closer to the surface by damage. Hedgehogs..
I feel the despair, I am loosing this battle. I fool them all.., no this one keeps coming back. No matter what I do.. pinging. Hedgehogs..
The boat rocks violently by the explosions, vasser einbruch... the pressure hull collapses..

We will meet in Valhalla.
Wolff and crew.

Couldn't you turn around when you started diving and run away from the convoy? Better luck next time!

I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting the prickly Hedgehog. I'm sure we'll get acquainted in the near future. I know how effective they were in real life, but how often do the escorts attack with them in the game and how good are they at placing them?

If they have them, and in later years they will, they will use them. They are devastating.

HH are bad news from 43 onwards,

May not be historically accurate, but if you must go after convoys, first use the accoustic homers on the escorts

then fill your boots with the hapless merchies

I see hedgehogs as a double edged sword. If they hit you they are devastating but if the miss even by a meter they are harmless.

as for turning around.. no, I was only some 500m from the first line of ships when I fired. Targets where in the middle of the convoy. I had the lead escorts behind me at that moment.
Problem was that the boat was already damaged from air attacks, so I could not dive as deep as I wanted to.
As for hedgehogs, if they don´t hit you they are harmless. Several hh passed so close to my boat they almost scraped the paint..
But this last escort that I could not fool must have been a real ace.

That was actually my first career in GWX 3.0 Gold. Yes it has taken me all this time since release to get to -44.
Low TC and RL events takes time

I admire the fact that you made it to 1944.
I have yet to reach beyond mid 1942 on DID.
