Rig for Silent Running
Or... Welcome to my pc hell - blaming it all on Subsim and Silent Hunter!
![]() It all started a year or so ago... had this setup for testing. Went through 4 or 5 different motherboards over a very short period - so this open rig was easy to use for quick swapping. The extra horrible fans were due to extreme summerheat - last summer! ![]() ![]() Can't believe it's been like that for that long. ![]() Had big plans building a new case, but then a month or so ago, I stumbled over a Silverstone case I've been wanting for a looong time. Now it finally had come to Denmark. Quick change of plans... a quick install while waiting for some 90mm fans and the 4870x2 is in for a RMA. The RAM died... so here's with a temporary 4770 - with a dead fan. Awfull sight: ![]() Nice clean look on the outside though, but don't like the big logo very much: ![]() Sorry for the dust! ![]() The setup should be watercooled with an external cooling "tower", but then I came across a new (?) Fractal Design case. Change of plan again! ![]() Building a base for pump and resorvoir: ![]() Making an "adapter" for my 2x12 cm radiator against 2x14 cm vents in case: ![]() Fractal Design's fans are black and white, so couldn't resist pimping my radiator fans for rads: ![]() "Front" side nearly finished - looks alright? ![]() But the back - oh! the horror! ![]() ![]() Tightening things up a bit: ![]() The 4870x2 is beyond repair and my dealer couldn't get a replacement. Instead he shipped me a Gigabyte HD5870. Which I do not have a water cooled block for. Sigh. Finished all cabling. Like the clean look a lot: ![]() Front side - crisp, clean and straight: ![]() Front and doors to front fans open: ![]() Now that concludes the old rig. Runs very, very silent and keeps everything very cool - way below 40 degree... Yesterday all parts for my Silverstone desktop arrived... ![]() Stay tuned for the drama! ![]() |

I've considered using liquid cooling instead of air for my new build. But then again I've considered building it inside a refrigerator so I could have a cool comp and cold beer.

You're in for a nasty surprise, if you follow that idea through... you're not the first one to come up with such a bright idea!
![]() Have a look here at Overclockers.com for reasons why: http://www.overclockers.com/forums/s...d.php?t=373263 They have some very fine threads for guiding you through your build, highly recommended! ![]() I'm using Feser One Cooling Fluid. That's destilled water with ethylene glycol and other good stuff. Protects copper against corrosion and prevents algea growth... but worthless for spicing up the coffee... ![]() |

I honestly didn't think about the workload on the fridge as far as cooling goes. Good thing I didn't try to go through with it.

Jan, Congrats on your rig. Looks slick, clean, and great cable management.

Have been running the rig for a while now.
Temps after a long night with Silent Hunter IV... ![]() cpu, Core 2 Q9450 - never went above 31 degree. Normally runs 26-28 degree motherboard, Asus P5Q - max. 39 degree, norm 34 degree gpu, Gigabyte HD5870 - max 48 degree, norm 42-44 degree Amazing what water - combined with 8 (eight) fans - can do for your system ![]() Thanks for the kind words! ![]() Would like to redo the wiring, maybe paint the chromed radiator sides black and of course also watercool the graphics card. Alas I'm too busy building the final rig, so this one is on the way to it's new owner. Was very tempted to keep it, but still wants a smaller design... preferable something like this: ![]() or this... ![]() ![]() - but unfortunately a 5970 is gigantic! Enormeous! ![]() |

Hi Jan,
Followed your system over from overclockers.com. Would love to get some more details about your Fractal build, mainly a parts list. Materials and measurements for your custom mounts would be fantastic too. Thanks again! -Ryan |

WELCOME ABOARD, tokyovigilante!
![]() I'm from the opposite direction - I play submarine games and study naval history, and I'm just barely learning about computers. I need all the people willing to speak to an old novice I can get. It's good to see you here.

![]() Thanks for the interest ![]() I've had a look around, but haven't kept the drawings, sorry for that. But in doubt, feel free to contact me here or by PM anytime. Best of luck with your build! ![]() |
