How to edit textures for explosions?

Yes, this is a texture:

Front view < > Top view

Explosions are not identical because there are different explosions, but on the screenshot are identical element for texture: from side and top view.

Now - how to change it for this:

First of all, have you checked out Old Style Explosions V1.1 it is a good explosion mod.

Second of all, I know all the texture files that control the explosions, I could give you a list if you want. GIMP, Photoshop, or paint.net could be used to edit them. However, I have no idea how they could be made to actually be 3d. I suppose the we could give the textures a bump map effect to make them appear a little more 3d, but that would only help a tiny bit.
