blah....

Two weeks, two careers gone...

First I make a career and have an extremely successful first mission, already have sunk about 10,000 tonnes and with plenty of torpedos in the boat. However I save a couple times while at sea, when I don't have time to finish the patrol one night. One night I was trying to load the third at sea save, when I get a visual studio error/ game crash after loading. I tried it twice, and the two saves before that. All of them bugged out.

So I make a new career. I have a fairly successful first mission, sinking 38,000 tonnes and using almost every bit of ammo I have (finished the last ship off with the flak gun). I start a second mission and save at sea again, while surfaced. I come back today to find that that save now has me labeled dead. I look at the previous saves and try loading the one that was dated earlier last night (presumably the beginning of my 2nd patrol?), however it turned out to be the beginning of my first patrol, and was just dated wrong.....

Should I not be saving at sea (I've always been on the surface when saving)? Should I always save when I come back to port and then reload before going out on a mission? Am I doing something else wrong? I checked the GWX manual, and didn't see anything that would explain my troubles. Should I not trust the dates on the saves?

It's just frustrating, never getting more than 1 patrol in on a career. I needed to vent a bit.

Save, check so the are nothing in sight, and if you have sunk a ship so don't save quit direct, wait untill you have free space to avoid issue when you try to load next time.If there are problems in dates I can't hardly say "no trust" so I got no answer to you in this case,I never have problem with saved mission,BUT ONLY SAVE on surface....

Save at sea is ok, just be on the surface, with nothing within 50KM of you, and you should be ok. Do not make any changes to the game, like adding or deleting mods while at sea, only when you are docked at home port between patrols. There is a save game bug that does crop up from time to time that no fix has been found for.

Maybe that was my problem. There had been a convoy nearby, but I waited until they got out of sonar range before surfacing and saving. Perhaps they needed a little more room.

I keep 2 save-files and alternate between them - that way if the worst happens, I don't loose the entire patrol.

Quite possibly....in addition to the excellent post by HW3, there is a strong suspicion by many that keeping the default 'Player' name in your saved folder ups the chances of stable saves.

If they are within render range you are in trouble. I can tell when I am not as my computer speeds up and my sub icon moves more smoothly at top TC.

I do still have that player sitting around. I'll make sure to delete him, and then make a bogus career, as suggested by the GWX manual, before making my real one. I guess from there I can make sure to save when I know I'm nowhere near a ship, and to save more often.
