Destroyer hydrophones

Do destroyers has passive sonar (hydrophones) or do they only have active? Do I need to assume that if I'm at periscope depth and can hear them, then they can hear me as well? Or is it the same situation for the destroyers as when I am surfaced and can't use my hydrophones? If they do have hydrophones, are they as good as mine? Like I said I usually try to keep it quiet if I have any destroyers in my sonar range, but I am wondering if I am being too cautious? Yet they must have some hydrophone capabilities, because they can find you when you are close to them and are underwater running at more than 2-3 knots?

I remember reading in this forum that they can only use one of them at a time. Either hydrophone, or active. As for their sensitivity I don't know, and would depend on stock or mods I'm sure. One way to minimise your ping reflection is to point towards or away from the pinging. Minimum noise means you need to minimise screw revolutions. In the 3D control room near the helmsman are 2 dials that indicate the RPM. There is no other interface to the user. Just set a specific knots value on the speed indicator. (near 1 knot) How many knots at what range? Trial and Death, I'm afraid.

I play on GWX. Usually my situation is one where I've set an intercept course on a convoy, but when I get there, and hear/plot their course from the sonar, I discover that I'm a few km off. I need to get in position quickly (before the convoy passes me) and silently (so I don't get noticed) and often times I end up having to make a choice between making very long shots (3-4k m) or ending up at a bad angle behind the convoy, or trying to get my targeting solution in 30 seconds b/c they are already at 345 degrees or going faster and possibly being noticed (if the destroyers have passive sonar). I guess I'll just have to do a little trial and error and see if they can hear me if I'm chugging those last couple km at 5-6 knots.

Will the destroyers be using their passive while they are cruising along escorting? Or do they just use it when they are actively hunting for me and not using active?

If you click on the destroyer's icon on the nav map, you will see some rings drawn around it. The one with a triangle piece missing at the stern of the ship is her hydrophone coverage. If you are in the missing area astern of the ship, you are in her baffles. In other words, she can't hear you over the noise from her own engines. The smaller half circle at the bow of the ship is her Asdic, or active sonar, coverage. You don't want to be in that area. Sven
