Would it be wrong of me to think that this is much more exciting than what's happening in our government over here?

Hear Hear. Maybe we should kick off the "Conjob has to go!" campaign?

Dunno if it is more exciting than what's happeing over there, but i understand Obama now has to get the name cards changed for his meeting with the Australian Prime Minister next week.

Not sure how we will go with a Welsh Prime Minister at the helm.

Never voted in the past, and not about to start.

Does this mean that the Aussie government is no longer going to be run from Beijing?

Looks like we all have about the same regard for our political leaders. Is it possible that Australia is some sort of Bizzaro World version of the States? Or... would that be the other way around?

There is a rumor that voting will soon be not compulsory, wonder if and when this happens! At the moment I wouldn't have a clue who to vote for, even if you vote for a minor group the vote will be handed on to one of the 2 main players who at the moment can't even sort out their own parties let alone manage the country!! You either vote for Devil1 or Devil2!!

As long as the citizens have the option of casting a "no vote", I think compulsory voting would be a good idea.

This would have to be combined with the idea of making election day a paid day off also.

A question for our Australian people: How is compulsory voting enforced?

There is no option for a No vote other than submitting a blank or invalid ballot card. Each year there is about 4-5% informal vote based on the 2001 election result and donkey voting (numbering candidates down the card from 1-n), is now less than 1%.

Through fines for not attending. You have to be enrolled to vote for them to catch you quickly otherwise if you never enroll they have to run checks from our Centrelink (Social Security), against the rolls to find people of voting age who are not registered. That slows em down by a few months but they catch up eventually.

They never prosecute unless you have racked up enough fines to make it worth taking you to court. Don't recall any recent prison sentences for non payment of the fines though.

Contrary to popular belief, your vote is not compulsory, and there is no way to enforce it even if it was.

What is compulsory, is to attend a booth to have your name crossed off the list.....................

that is, if you've even enrolled to vote in the first place.

So does that mean you can enter the polling station, have your name crossed/accepted on the voting register then you can simply put your voting slip into the ballot box without having entered any preference/choice?
