I recently got Silent Hunter 5, and started playing the campaign. I'm impressed by the graphics, but so far by little else.
Admittedly, i'm not that far in (beginning of 1940) but there are some details that I find honestly Jarring. For instance, I'm at war with france, but there isn't a single french vessel on the sea or in french ports (and it's not that said french ports are so far from my usual patrol routes that they can be ovrlooked). And I don't relaly mean that they should let me try and sink the richelieu (oh wait, they should, why not?). The big problem is that it seems to seriously lack in variation. Now, I actually have SHIII, but I didn't play it much due to lack of time, I never tried it with big mods like TGW. So I was wondering, which one is more worth my time? SH5 or SHIII+TGW? |

It depends on what you want from the game. Currently SH5 is only three months old, and still needs alot of love and care. SH3 with any of the big supermods is definitely more complete, and at this stage has more to offer. SH4, like SH5, is a better platform for mods and a better game overall, but not as much attention has been paid to it by modders.
So if you want good AI, a complete war, all the u-boats plus dozens of different ship types and all sorts of cool things to see, you want GWX (TGW no longer exists), WAC, or LSH3. Another option is SH4 with OM and OMEGU. You don't get as many neat things to look at, but you get better graphics, better crew management, better radio management, plus a very good campain and AI structure. The possibilities aren't quite endless, but there are many. ![]()

I'm not really intersted in SH4, american subs simply lack the charm of the old reliable U-boots
![]() But yeah, variety and completeness of the campaign is what I'm looking forwards to the most. I might just move back to SHIII until SH5 gets something comparable. Any mods working on top of GWX and Sim commander that i really shouldn't miss? |

SH 4 has a seperate mission pack for a German U boat in the Pacific.
Or the newest versions on sale are all patched and include the U boat mission\campaign. ![]()

Without meaning any disrespect to any other mods, I'd suggest you try GWX3.0 and if that doesn't give sufficient gameplay satisfaction try another super mod until you find one you like.
Hopefully SH5 will be more up to speed given a bit more time. |

![]() That's why I mentioned OM (Operation Monsun) and OMEGU (Operation Monsun Environmental Graphic Upgrade). I play GWX and OM, and while SH3 has more to offer in the way of cool stuff (I said that already, didn't I?), SH4 U-boats has better crew management, better radio, better charts (KM grids [right down to the 4-digit locations] and latitude/longitude) and a lot of other cool new stuff. And most of its problems have been fixed.

If all your really interested in is a uboat campaign, then id do as Jimbuna suggested and load SH3 with GWX, or any other supermod that happens to grab your attention.
SH5 has a long way to go. I'm sorta playing it now because its new to me still, and some things i really like despite many functional shortcomings. SH4, really does get a bad and undeserved rap. In reality, its two submarine sims rolled into one, and you have many choices available as to what type of submarine you want to drive and areas of operation. Admittidly though, SH4, is a bit of a mixed bag where functionality is concerned, but many of the shortcomings have been addressed in some manner. SH5 has in some ways left me yearing for a good type9 uboat game and had me contemplating starting a new supermod for SH4 for JUST that expressed purpose since its totally lacking in SH5, but ahh... i just don't have any wind in my sails. Easier to point to Operation Monson, and Lurkers excellent work, that, and if i really wanted long range patrols, id rather have 6 tubes forward and 4 aft ![]() |
