Default Teen sailor Abby Sunderland alive and well

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37621453/ns/us_news

her boat was found adrift with her aboard, alive and well... problem was that her craft was de-masted in the storm.

quite a problem for a sailboat.

suppose she was not in distress... just knew her cause was lost and by activating her beacons she would eventually be found.

if i were her... id abandon this particular effort, repair the craft and head out again on another attempt.

Caught the tail end of a news report last night that said she hadn't been heard from. Glad to see some good news. *phew*

Default Gutzy kid

Apparently her brother had also done this. He didn't make the record though. Still, what a family!

Other kids this age are just as resourceful and courageous if given a chance to show it. The trouble is that parents, myself included, don't allow them to express. We see them as the little kids we sheltered and helped to walk.

I salute the parents of these two sailors. They had courage to let go.

Or the parents just don't have the dough that needs to be coughed up in order to get a round the world - yacht and attempt together. Isn't free you know.

I'm sure she will attempt it again. I would guess that failure is not an option in her world.

If I were her, I'd join a particular ex-marine on his sailboat for a relaxing cruise and some well-deserved lessons in boarding action

Speechless.

Ohhhkay...

Well um from what I have read she is not out of the woods yet. She is demasted with the rigging hanging over the side. Ive been in this situation before and its a very very bad position to be in.

The nearest 'rescue' is at least a day away.

I really hope the weather holds fairly calm because in her current state any kind of sea state could become very dangerous as the ship is basically dead in the water and cannot be pointed into the weather even if she has an auxillary motor.

I suppose if the weather gets bad she will cut away the rigging in the meantime try to hang on to it and salvage it.

Why?
Where would you set the minimum age?
Over here it is 16 IIRC.

That's hot. I mean, what? Oh! You pervert! That wasn't what I was talking about at all! I was going to teach her the nuances of maritime navigation and ship-to-ship boarding protocols. No, really, I swear
