Default The Fog - blind shot

Hi all,

I just had a really cool shot at a merchant. Using the Environment Mod 2.0 I got into heavy fog, you know, 200m visibility.

I made out a merchant via hydrophon and chased him for about 4 hours real time (more than 6 in game). I must have crossed her course several times, I probably passed her in 1000m distance without seeing her. As if the fog wasnīt enough, night fell and I had to hurry up.

Finally, when the sun was just setting, I figured out the merchantīs course and followed her blindly (thatīs what men do when it comes to women).

Suddenly I spotted a shadow before me and a blurred reflection on the water. The merchant was about 200m ahead of me and I still couldnīt really see her. So I fired a blind shot at the reflection before me, and actually hit her right from behind (I know, one shouldnīt do that). Now I could see what I had hit for the very first time. I finished her off with the deck gun at 100m distance. This was really spooky and I enjoyed this strange chase a lot! Probably the thick fog isnīt a bug, itīs a feature

talking of fog - 1.02 - I get the call "Smoke on the Horizon" and go up topside, in the distance a fog bank you can't see the Horizon. Guess I have a super watch team.

Nice kill!

Recently I was submerged in the northern channel between England and Ireland when sonar picked up an incoming convoy. When it came close, I raised to periscope depth and: - dense fog, nothing at all to see! Also, it was late December and at 9 a.m. the sun was really low on the horizon, with beautyful rays of light going through the mist.

So I decided to surface and started zig-zagging through the convoy while searching for tankers to fulfill my mission. It was really a thrill to navigate between the columms of ships, never knowing when the next shadow would appear out of the reddish wall around me.
After a while i found a large tanker, set up a rough manual solution (unfortunately the game wonīt let you lock onto a target in the mist) and put a torpedo into her side. After the fish went off, things even got more interesting as the ships started zig-zagging and looking for me with searchlights, and the destroyers coming in to look for me. Now I had to look for ships coming from practically any direction, with only seconds to react before a collision would kill me.
Unfortunately, I lost the tanker (which did not sink) and could not find it any more. So I decidet to go for whatever target I could get in front of my boat. Doing that, I got a little bit too adventureous and finally ended up in a collision with a freighter that suddenly appeared out of nowhere right in front of me.

I must admit that this situation was probably the most impressive and thrilling I experienced in SH 5 so far. Seeing ships pass by like ghosts in the mist or seeing their silhuettes against the misty sun was really fascinating.

There is a lot of beauty in this game!

By the way you guys, there is a problem with the fogdistances.cfg in Env2.0/2.1 you should unload the mod delete that file from it and reload in JSGME. It will be much better that way.

The current fogdistances.cfg has a bug, where fog is so thick that you cannot see a ship at 20m! Now I understand that this kind of fog exists, but it is not real common, and it makes playing the game basically impossible. In all my testing with the bugged file, I was never even able to get out of that fog, and I was in the Mediterranean at the time!

Ships are female, because it takes them hours to set sails and get ready. Furthermore, one man alone cannot handle them.

And they are female because they are so expensive!

@SteelViking:
OK, I donīt have enough experience with the new environmental settings yet to tell if the fog is too thick. The only time I experienced it it was like maybe 200 - 300 m and disappeared during the day.

I liked it the way it was, but I will keep an eye on it.

Happy Hunting everyone!
