Default Anyone esle experience a chicken convoy?

So, after all my griping about not finding anything to shoot at, I finally run into a very nice convoy on the eastern approach to the San Bernardino Strait. It was about 12 ships plus a screen of another 8-10 DD's and subchasers, lead by a Maya Heavy Cruiser. I set up and targeted the cruiser since it was the highest tonnage / value target in the convoy and then managed to hit the magazine with a lucky torpedo. Bang... Boom... "She's going down!".. and then the entire fleet reverses course and runs away at high speed in the opposite direction...

I've been chasing them now for the last 6 hours (game time) and they don't seem to be slowing down... has anyone had this happen to them before? I've seen convoys go wild when you start shooting, but to literally turn and run away is new...

Never seen that. I guess I don't have the reputation you've got.
They heard it was you and turned tail.

I doubt it... first patrol of a new career, so I doubt even my crew have any idea who I am

Maybe they thought it was a minefield? Or the Kraken?

no, that is normal, I have seen it often. It is the stock game. When you are detected, the convoy will zig away from your position. This was actually standard operating procedure in RL. If you break contact, they should eventually resume their previous heading, although not necessarily through the same area. You should be able to track them with your sonar and plot an intercept course.

It's kinda funny last night I ran into a convoy and another parellel opposite course attack about 2500 off the port side, mid `44. Used the salvo trick by Dimiscus and slabbed 3 Maru's. As soon as the last fish was off at silent speed and a steady dive I escaped with them without a clue to my location. I see star shells on the starbord side even.
Here's the thing; before the two escorts gave up the remaining maru's sort of drifted about. If I had fish left and came about I probably could have polished of another merchant or two.
