Russian Navy to retain Akula class nuke subs till 2019

MOSCOW (BNS): The Russian Navy will retain its Akula class nuclear attack submarines in service till 2019, the country’s Navy chief has said.

Russia is building the new Borey class ballistic missile submarines which will replace the Akula-class subs.

When I read that, I muse that the American grip on our lives is scary. Despite being fairly familiar with Russian names, the first thought that flashed through my mind is still the Project 971 that NATO calls Akula, not the 941 that Russia calls Akula but NATO calls Typhoon...

To make it some what easier, Project 941 akula ( NATO typhoon) there is only 1 still active TK208 Dmitri Donskoy the beluva test submarine.

Then you got the submairnes they are acctually talking about Project 971 Schuka B or (NATO Akula)

its no suprise the 971's will be around that long the victor III's are running now into the 25 year plus margin so the akulas should to although launched in the 80's and 90's still effective units, same as we will see the 688i's probably into the 2020's.

Wait, Russia is replacing a class of fast attacks with a class of SSBNs?

That's like replacing an MBT with an APC.

The article has the same picture, but has it listed as the Project 941 attack submarine.

I'm guessing they mean the Akula/Typhoon, not the Shchuka-B/Akula, as they mention the Dmitry Donskoy, the Arkhangelsk and the Severstal.
