Jan.12, 1942. While patrolling the Molucca passage, I picked up sound contacts. Steering towards the contacts, I surfaced and increased speed. After a short while, I was able to see smoke on the horizon, and the shapes of two huge warships heading directly towards me.
I dove to periscope depth, and was able to ID the lead ship as an Takao Heavy Cruiser by the configuration of the masts and radio antennea. Since these guys were bearing directly down on me, I decided to pull one of the pages from Clark Gable's books, and set up a bow shot. My soundman reported warships closeing at slow speed. I set up the TDC and my 4 remaining forward torpedoes. At 1500 yds, I fired and dove to 100ft. The next thing I know, I hear the detonations of the torpedoes followed by huge secondary explosions! Shortly thereafter, I get the notice "She's going down"! Not bad if I do say so myself ![]() |
