Default Being pinged....

Ok....daft question time, has anyone got a soundfile or vid of the above....I am being pinged but not sure if they are seeing me or not or if its just the normal pinging sound if that makes sense. Is it a different noise if they have actually found you ?

The louder and faster the pings the more likely they have you. Single soft pings are just searching.

As far as I understand it, they are directly pinging your sub if you can hear the noise.

They still may not be able to accurately locate you even if yhey ping you (because, for example, you may have passed through a thermal layer or the crew skill is low)

I think you wouldn't be able to hear the sound unless it directly hit the sub (or was very close) because it is emitted in quite a focussed beam so that submerged objects can be accurately tracked. However, don't take my word for that because I don't know much about it!

Might be best to wait for someone with a greater knowledge of these things!

when the escorts detect you on passive sonar, they will head in your direction and start to ping. Even if you hear the ping, it just means that they have detected you, not that they have found you. When they know where you are they will drop DCs, if the DCs are close, you know they have found you....

At that time, it is time to try evasive maneuver, the best one being to go as deep as possible to try to evade or go below their active sonar cone.

Last night, I watched 3-4 IJN escorts searching for me in RFB 2.0 and it looked quite realistic. They would circle around listening on passive sonar, intermittently switching to active sonar. When they detected my boat, one escort would make a run right over my position and drop DCs. After they lost me, they also dropped DCs at the wrong spot.

With TMO, not sure about stock, but probably so, escorts are doing one of two things, pinging or listening. Basically if they're moving they're always pinging, but only pick you up if you get in the sonar cone. Why in the cone, it depends on many factors how well they have you pinged..which you can tell by the sound..You know when they speed up over you, they're making a run..If you're deep enough you can haul arse and the charges will fall behind you.

Fun to play with the cams off and not see what they're throwing....

If you want to understand TMO's AI...Ducimas explains well..http://www.ducimus.net/sh415/ai.htm

If they ping, you are in their cone and have been located...ships will zig, ect..you're found...The next question is how solid the contact is. The best you can do is go deeper and get a narrow profile..Sometimes just turning to be narrow will stop the pinging.
