As I advance in my career I usually like to pick up the best sonar I can. When I catch ships that are unescorted I start pinging them until I have an exact range.
My question is this, can merchants hear the ping like a naval vessel can? I've never noticed that they could but it has been a while since I made it that far into a career to have sonar. Also how well does that sonar that gives range/speed work? I think it is one one the later models. |

if you can audibly hear the sonar, they should be able too. later in the war sonar was developed that was not audible to the human ear (just a side effect of the development, that was not the exact objective) but would still cause the ship and things to rattle, so one could tell when they were being pinged.
im just guessing that non navel ships are not coded to respond to pings. |

never actually had chance to use sonar, not even in a single mission - how wld u turn it on and how wld u go about using such a device?
Is it used in the same way as the hydrophones and I presume it replaces the hydrophones? |

In game, I don't think the merchants can hear you ping.
In real life, anyone below the waterline can hear it, without any equipment. I've layed in my rack and heard it many times. (You can't miss it!) |

![]() How you turn it on????.... I'm manage to do it in only one way. By myself. Press H to go in sonar station. Turn phone's wheel around and when you found direction of screw sound press SEND(E) button (by your left side). Then you'll hear PING sound. After that go to the periscope and ask your sonarman for distance. He'll give a number ![]()

It becomes even easier if you're carrying homing torpedoes. Just work out a basic solution point the torpedo on its way.

It happens my hydrophone has no buton below "SENDE". The mouse cursor turns red and the word "ping" appears but I can't click anything to ping a contact since no button is present. What can that be? ![]() |
