Returning from a 26 day patrol in my U-56 with 2 eels and a wish to bag one more kill, I stopped and drift fished and sure enough a 8.5 ton freighter appeared on a flat sea but she saw me before I could submerge so I decided to put her down with my deckgun. I forgot about my green crew. Normally I can clean the clock of any vessel with a hard charge and withering fire ... but when I got back up to the surface my engines would not respond. So I elected to fire the deck guns while drifting.
The green crew with a green gunner to lead were slow to load, and could not hit the side of a barn. Never did I see such a bunch of bananas ... Then when they finally go their range and bearing sorted and made hits the ship turned on a course direct for us! No success on the diesel engines so while I banged away with the deck gun I had to get us out of harms way so I flooded the tanks and called for 20 meter depth at flank. The DC motors kicked in but that freighter still hard charged us and just missed taking off my sail and hit the flak gun rail for minor damage. I resurfaced and threw the rudder to starboard, the engines came to life and I swear there was no response to the rudders. The boat just mushed straight. I order the deck gun to hammer away at the now very close target and we destroyed the freighter. I made a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich with a Polish dill garlic pickle and told the crew (burp) to head for the barn in France to make repairs ... S' PC I used 3 cheeses in the grilled cheese ... ![]()
