Default Your opinion

Hey everyone - not sure what drove me back towards a subsim game...have not played one since the released Silent Service for NES back in the day. So far I have been playing SH5 for about 2 weeks and I "like" it - however I am not a SH veteran like the rest of you.

So where do you recommend that I start? SH4 or 3? Don't really want to go to far back as graphics will really suffer. But I would like to see the things that you all talk about fondly and try and get an honest noob comparision for this game.

Try em both and formulate your own opinion....both are pretty good when a supermod is added

Last subsim was SS eh, well I say that you must give Aces of the Deep and Silent Hunter 1 a try. Don't worry about the graphics, you'll find it's not so important when you have a destroyer chasing your butt.
After those, SH3+GWX is also a must. I think a fully modded SH4 is also very good, but I have no experience with it.

SH3 DVD + GWX SuperMod is one sweet game. No DRM (not even SecureROM), fully patched out of the box. You might run into some problems running it on Windows 7 though, I did. But it's only $10.

I've never been too happy with Silent Hunter IV though, mostly since I didn't like the fleet boats. The U-boat Missions thing still feels like an afterthought.

Yea I think SH3 would be a good starting piont.

Most of the issues have been hammered out and there are alot of mods to suit it to your taste.

Let me make one recommendation that the others will not. Install the game, get the offical patches, and play it un modded for a while. That way you will get not only a feel for what you might want to change but you will know what it was like before the mods.

Lastly once you get the game installed and running and decide to try some mods get yourself JSGME (Jones Soft Generic Mod Enabler) and learn how to use it.

Good luck !

The Grey Wolves mods for SH3 and Real Fleet Boat or Trigger Maru for SH4 are large compilations of numerous mods by a large group of individuals. Those are termed 'Super Mods' here. Visit the mod forums for more information.

I always liked SH3 because by the time the modders got through with it, it was a fully fleshed-out product. Compared to today, graphics don't look that good, but, in my world, I'd rather have a challenge and feel good about such things as outwitting intelligent ASW groups.

I echo the sentiment of the poster above who felt the U-Boat add-on for SH4 was out of place. It's a very different game from even its parent SH4 - Fleet Boats and introduced the concept of resupply, changed the grid map, allowed one to call for help, etc. It's also responsible for introducing the never-attacking, but constantly spawning Allied aircraft, in this case, a pair of Brewster Buffalos (why?) that serve only to frustrate by whacking us right out of TC despite presenting NO threat! In my experience, SH4 also had resource hogging and stability issues that encouraged me to submit it to the circular file at the first available opportunity. It should also be pointed out that SH4 U-Boat is a game that one simply cannot run at 100% realism as one is occasionally expected to engage in missions that are so lengthy and so lacking in resupply resources that one will be out of Diesel #2 by the time one arrives at the start point. And don't get me started on the tendency for the Walter boat to ping pong for extended periods of time between 5ft/1.5m and 50ft/15.25m when surfacing from ANY speed!

Sorry to necro but I recently got my SH3 and love it. Have not added the GWX mod as I am doing the naval academy and do not want to ruin the campaign(career) before I play the game. Geez this game is put together and delivered so much better than SH5.

Thanks again guys!

I strongly recommend installing GWX, even if it means starting over your academy.
