Noticed in the Mods forum that somebody mentioned that the VIIB is using the VIIC conning tower?
Seriously, The devs didn't even put the proper conning towers on the correct subs? I thought the point of modelling essentially "one sub class" was to have increased detail, not less.

For what its worth, the 2nd 7B conning tower is correct.
But ahh.. if what i saw what i saw correctly the other day, the upc file for the subs is all fubared. You'll never see it, or the 7C's turn/2 without fixing the ubuats UPC files. If you know what to adjust, it takes 5 minutes to fix. |

No links or pics, just someobdy who mentioned in the "mods" section regarding the VIIB using the standard VIIC conning tower.
IIRC, somebody had mentioned this before the game was released some months back (when some of the first screens came out). I went from the VIIA to the VIIC so I don't have ay pics of the VIIB yet. However, if you go to the museum in-game, it sure looks like the VIIB is using the VIIC conning tower. @Ducimus: Can you tell if the first VIIB tower is even in the game? (I am still learning to find my way around the files).

It is me who is hammering on the fact the VIIB has the wrong conning tower. I havent seen any evidence supporting the fact that the 2nd VIIB conning tower is correct and i would love to see some screenshots of it. Anyway i have been asking on the mod forum for somebody to fix this but noone had ventured out there yet to give it a go. I got a PM from Dan of the dev team saying that after the first patch it should be easy to fix (i guess this was ment as a hint for the modders to do the job) . But if there really is a 2nd VIIB that is indeed correct (i have yet to find it in museum or game files) then how hard can it be to fix the 1st one?

In the goblin editor i did find what i would call a modified VIIC tower to look somewhat like a VIIB tower. But still its not as good as the one they did for sh-3. And you can only get this tower if you upgrade it. I dare to say this is somewhat of a sloppy job by the devs.

All the conning towers for B model in the game are OK for now.
The first can be seen when you select the Narvik mission and VII B, you will get an early tower like Prien's U47 at the time of Scapa Flow and perhaps until july 40. If you select the Bismark mission you will get a late tower. What is not known is if the second or intermediary tower (like silent hunter 3) or cut tower is there. For this we have to wait for the patch and see if we can have this cut tower during improvements. The photos showing some of the last pictures of U-47 in february 41 show this new "cut" tower. As i said above, the Narvik mission shows a correct tower with a small basket or bath behind like A but has wind deflector in the middle of the tower. I hope to have this early type B soon with the patch. |

I was thinking on the same lines. Can you provide some photos / data that different type B boats weren't equipped with only one of the three conning towers through their whole life span? About Prien's VIIB, I am inclined to believe it as I too have seen photos that have the same CT as VIIA, but I haven't seen one with SH3 CT. Or I might but I can't remember now. It would be nice if someone could provide some screens... ![]() |

I can only assume, that whoever worked on the towers in SH3, did not work on the towers in SH5. But honestly, pick up a book, or look online, there is enough info available to get these sort of details correct first time.
I was under the impression that the VIIB was playable, is it not?

At least this has been done right in SH5. But there is one thing wrong that has been carried over from SH3, and it is that flag pole on the bow. ![]() ![]()

Well hmmm, I have to reinterate on something. That is the pole on the bow. The Type VIIB did have such a thing on it's bow, and was called a "Jack Staff". Though I dont see this on the drawings of the VIIA which actually didn't have the "A" designation but was simply the Type VII.
At least according to a great book I have on the Type VII's called "Anatomy of the Ship, The Type VII Uboat" by David Westwood published by the Naval Institute Press. ![]() Bow detail, note item 33 which is the jack staff. ![]() Im going to do some more digging in this book but from what I see so far they modeled the boats in SH5 very accuately. But as far as the towers go, it depends on what year they were built. The Type VIIC's in 1939 & 40 had essentially the same tower as the B did.

The best example how they got even the VIIC tower wrong is obvious by simply looking at some of the VIIC pictures. The CT deck is too high, and this was modelled incorrectly even in SH3. The deck railings are also wrong, as far as I can see from screen shots. Again they are linked to the hull model, and not CT. Only this time we have early war VIIC deck railings, and not late war when they had their deck guns removed. |
