I've discovered that going Decks Awash in SH5 is possible. Unfortunately you cannot open the CT hatch.
If you're on the bridge, you can use the UZO but you won't be able to dive (or access the hatch.) And if you're inside the sub, you have to use one of the periscopes since you can't access the bridge. I've used decks awash as part of my tactics for many situations in SH4+OM, but I'm finding it extremely frustrating in SH5. Another issue I've noticed that's been driving me up the wall is that the Observation scope will not go under water at periscope depth while using it. The only way you can seem to get around this is to dive down to 13-14m. The attack scope on the otherhand works just fine and you can lower it below the water and inch it up and down at will. It would also appear that Ubisoft once again ignored that the Obs scope has a larger apperature, but there's no difference in visual quality at night. |

They modelled the Obs scope so that you could only look through it if it was physically possible to do. So, to get it to lower right down and still look through it, your head would have to be inside the deck. If you step back from the scope you can see the eye piece is right by the floor. About the aperture - I haven't noticed any different in light collection either.

Okay that makes sense then. I don't mind realism, but they've done it in a very mish mash way in SH5.

Oh nice! I'll have to grab that. It's not as sophisticated as some of the Obs periscope mods for SH3 or SH4, but the contrast works well enough.

You'll see the icon in the top-right to show the status of the boat as being underwater. I'll bet that ships won't be able to spot the conning tower either, even at close range, since your are officially 'underwater', so might be a small exploit. I'm sure it's easy to mod the depth at which the boat is 'underwater', since it was done for SH3, but may have other knock-on effects. For example, it might mean that you are no more hidden from ships' visual sensors at decks awash than when fully surfaced. Just a limitation of the game, and not a new one. Hopefully it can be modded in future, to give an additional 'state' for your boat (something in between surfaced or submerged) that affects enemy sensors realistically. |

I noticed that the first time i did a night surface attack. I had to dive but couldn't because the damn hatch wouldn't open. It must be hard coded to lock at a certain depth. I guess right now it's set too shallow.

That very well could be, and if it could be found, it could be fixed.
As for the signiature, it functions much like periscopes do. The smaller your profile and slower your speed, the harder it is for them to detect you. If you turn map labels on, you can actually see them shrinking just by dropping to 7-8 meters. I'm not sure if that's based on simply visibility, or sound as well. They seem to have modeled both in the game as far as detection radius goes. |

The Attack scope on the other hand does not require full extension, thats why it's the attack scope, it's designed this way. At least they have these two scopes right in SH5, unlike SH3 where they had the obs scope where the attack scope's mechanisim should have been in the control room. And at least it's animated right and proper. I always remain standing there by it and raise it first watching it come up out of the floor, then once it stops then I click on it. On the attack scope I do wish I could sit at it like in SH3, and look through, or take my head away while sitting.
