Yea well what is it?

Can you completely ignore your assigned patrol grid and go someplace else, and expect to find ships to sink, like in SH3?

Yes. I ran into a task force off Africa () because I went exploring. What it was doing there, IDK. Escort carrier with about 7 destroyers.

The patrols still play out like in Sh3, so yes, you will find targets outside your assigned patrol areas.

Basically, during each campaign section (which covers a certain period of time) you're offered several missions. These are (often) large tasks that can last for several months and allow you to refit several times while you're on them.

An example would be "sink 100,000 tons of enemy shipping in the south-western approaches region".

Additionally, you sometimes get special missions like "recon that harbour" or "land a spy in the vicinity of...".

You can also combine missions, that is, work on one mission, then head for another area and try to fulfill your orders there.

So far I like the campaign in SH5, since it provides you with a more focussed experience that makes better use of the historical background.

It's nothing like the canned SH2 missions.

I like this concept of the new campaign, I think that is the one thing about SHV that stands out. Keeping the freedom of SHIII, but giving a dynamic feedback to the overall progress. That is one piece where players could feel that their efforts do contibute to the war goal (though arguably a single submarine probably didn't matter for the big picture). I am curious what modders really make out of that in the future.

PS. Post more, I want to know it all...
