The good:
i) Manual targeting is a massive improvement. Specifically, stadimeter, recognition manual filtering (can't find draught though?) are very good. Attacks feel more intuitive to me. ii) Atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere. I think the recreation of the interior of the boat is terrifically done, especially if you have an interest in the subject matter. The uboat pen walkabout is a little thing, but very enjoyable. iii) Sea and environmental effects are very well done. iv) Tactical map is inspired. The bad: i) Interface needs work. I don't have a problem with the aesthetics, it is just a little confusing at the moment. Glitchy and buggy too. Needs to be more intuitive. ii) Irritating little bugs. iii) Irritating DRM. Interestingly, GTAIV was also very net-centric. Nobody mentions this. The ugly: i) They needn't have bothered with the manual. It is utterly appalling. Seriously, heads should roll. ii) No training structure of any kind. A torpedo & gunner range will be most welcome. How are new players supposed to fare in this? iii) Compass and Bearing readouts. Clearly an omission; your watchmen shout out bearings that you cannot do much with outside of estimates. Pretty sure this will be sorted. iv) The well-reported morale bug. v) The start of the campaign is crap. I see what they were trying to do, but it was poorly executed; probably rushed. Quick summary: I like it, but most importantly, it positively screams potential. With some patches to sort out the snags (and they are snags) and some scripting (I don't think people know exactly how significant scripting is) plus mod talent, I am confident that given time this will be a damn good product. |
