Default OK - Curiosity Got The Better Of Me

OK as a big opponent of the DRM I admit curiosity and love of the SH series got the better of me - so I bought the game, I suspect not unlike a few others who at first said they would never do so!

A few observations

The graphics are good there is simply no denying - and over all I'd say the game has alot going for it - it's like Ubisfot has thrown us bone and asked us to make a meal of it -

To my mind none of the new elements promised in the publicity make any sense, sure there there but there is not much coherance or rational so without knowing what these amasing new crew abilities are its difficult to know why you need bother with them at all

I imagine as the game is modded that most people will just come to ignore the so called interactivity with the crew - its repetative and banal and adds nothing to the game.

Ask the guy to man the deck guns - he says sure thing and nothing happens - same with flak gun - sometimes some other guys turn up at the gun, or they dont - either way you have to do all the aiming and shooting - or have I missed something

Old one eye gets upset about something - something about the guys being lewd - you tell him there, there and that seems about that

Not sure about enemy anti submarine warfare - sure the destroyers do come looking for you but they dont seem all that interested in killing you - a bit lite on depthcharging

Aircraft - the RAF is out there - just flying around - dont worry they never attack you, they dont even seem to notice you.

Special Abilities:
With no instruction on how these are suposed to work one can never really know if your guys are using them - in fact often despite your being the captain they outright refuse use them

Player controls:
There's no rudder - no ability to fine tune steering
No Depth Under Keel
The clock in the command room does not match the time on the stopwatch
No music for the long boring bits between engagements

TDC - interesting this kind of works - you just got to fiddle with the angle on the bow, the rest of it is straight forward - its the angle on bow thing you have to master - if your in close with the enemy say within 900m it doesn matter - but for long range shots it does - there is a fine yellow line wich moves in relation to where you're putting the the angle on the bow - you can use this to lead your shot - its a bit hit and miss but so's the rest of the game.

I cant get the dam game to work in German - tried to reload and got everything in german with no English subtitles tried the steps outlined in one of the posts dealing with this issue but the files refered to dont exist

The DRM isnt an issue - I dont like it on principle but it has not caused any hassles

Overall the game is kind of there - but kind of not there - the missions dont saeem to mean anything - you trundle out to do your patrol in your dedicated patrol area. Your not registered as having arrived until you've sunk something - if you score under the amount specified in the orders, say 50k or a 100k then, well then nothing happens, and not much happens if you do

When you run out of torps you go home, get some new ones and do it all again

Seems the mod team have started their thing which is good - this baby's going to need a lot of TLC to make it coherent - as it is it seems very childish

It might do nicely for kids with out much real interest in the period or the genre' but it cant hold much for any one whose interested in a simulation - kind of like trying to compare the orignal Brother's in Arms, with Medal of Honour - the one tried to provide an accurate simulation of the war and of the period and the tactics therein the other just didnt care

Regards to all

Get the SH4 UI mod sticked at the top of the Mod Workshop and you will have all of that except the Clock in teh Command room.

I think what is really frustrating to me is that requesting resuply while out to see, I ALWAYS get the "They have denied our request"

Ok well I'm out to sea with just barely enough fuel to make it to the nearest friendly port, what happens if I'm forced to dive or have to defend? Oi...

ANyway, the SH4 UI adds back a lot of stuff... Make sure to check page 2 though for the list of buttons that DONT work.

I was just able to get the deck gun crew on deck by simply pointing my bioncs at a target and pressing Space. Suddenly, they were on deck and shooting. Didn't talk to anyone. heh

Need to start a thread over all those that swore they wouldn't buy it and did. Be a good poll. Yea, I love all these guys who said they would never buy it are now playing it since their wife went behind their backs and bought it for them. My wife did call when she saw it and I told her no...I'll wait until it's fixed.

I have been fence sitting and just about to buy it on a few different occasions. lol
So far I haven't though. Last time the 'wanna buy weakness' was I went to my usual site I buy from and found out they pushed back the release day by about a week. It isn't out here in New Zealand officially until the 12th. It was enough to put me off again.
Mind you steam is sitting there taunting me the whole time to buy it ....

I bought it. I have yet to decide if i want to open it or return it and keep playing 3 and 4. I guess I'll keep browsing the forums and tormenting myself.

It's precisely because people are typically unable to maintain a principled stance when it interferes with a perceived pleasure that companies like Ubi know they can force a rancid DRM system on the market.

People will bitch and moan, but they'll end up buying it anyway.

"What choice did we have?"....

Still holding out for the DRM to be removed. Tried to check the price in my local GAME store and was told it was only available online at their website. Went there to check the price and lo and behold saw this:

http://www.game.com.au/silent-hunter...mes/SILHUNT5PC

Can't see them doing much selling then when point A says go to point B and vice versa. My AU$89.99 stays in my pocket.

I may have been the first to vote no I would not buy it. Once I saw that it could be modded, I changed my mind. I see good things in the future.
Once that thing that everyone is worried about is gone and all the modders are able to do their thing, it will be great.

But there is alot of work to be done. I can't do any of it, so I'm gonna try to donate more to subsim, maybe Neal will give modders more swag.

Default Thanks for asking

In truth not yet although I'm getting good at installing other folks mods. I wish I could - am prepared to learn if some one would take the time to show me or involve me in a project

Often thought that for some of the larger mods some folks should guide others in putting them together sort of give the boring or mundane bits to those of us with out much skill, so we can do the mechanical work while the real modders get to concentrate on the bigger issues

Regards

Default Dont bother with Steam

Dont beother with Steam just another layer on top of the DRM - wait until the release in NZ - there is some serious modding already and perhaps a few more patches - annoying when you install a mod which is knocked out by the next patch - time is on your side

The game is OK but completely lacking the kind of imersion you were used to in SH3 but I hear from some very good modders there's lots of scope for reall modding

Fingers crossed - while your wating there's always Aliens V's Preditor, Napoleon Total War or the lates in the Stalker series

Regards
