Default RFB questions

First of. sry if this was supposed to be posted in the mod workshop. Anyway, decided to give RFB mod a try. After the first confusion with the new command bar layout i was off to tokyo on patrol. And the confusion was total, until going to the old sh3 way of sonar (not at surface). However, i was at periscope depth waiting for a sonar contant to learn how to intercept a ship without the magic contact lines going from my sub. When did get a "Warship bla bla bearing 220". I cheered and went to periscope to see if i could spot them. (Since i already guessed that the sona wasnt as powerful as in stock). To my great suprise i spot 3 escorts and a liner. And they were perhaps 1000 meters away. I thought they were on fire first, until i realised that was the exhaust smoke. Anyway, is it normal to not hear sonar contacts until they are that close? Its Jan '42 (i think. first patrol). Clear weather and 13ms wind.

Also, i didnt have a single plane contact, and i had the radar antenna up all the time..

Appreciate your help..

/Alex

First off I'm assumeing you're useing the latest RFB v2.0. This mod is geared more towards realism, so things that you may experience in the stock game don't apply for the most part. If I'm not mistaken, the sonar sensors have been tweaked in this version so that the distance you hear a contact is related to the speed at which the contact is traveling. Still, your not being able to hear a contact at 1000 yds is strange. Did you man the sonar yourself, or did you depend on your crew? Crew experience plays a part in how and when, and if they report a contact.

I've had times, though not many that I see a ship through the scope, but can't hear them. Also, I think the sonar starts working best at around 75 feet. There have been times that after spotting a ship and going to PD, I can't hear them until I dive alittle deeper. Once the sonar picks them up, I head back to PD, and all is well. Stick with it. RFB is a great mod. And if you like a more realistic experience, this is the way to go IMO.

ah ok. I do like a challenge. makes a merchant going to davy jones so much sweeter.. I think i still have the default crew in there, I relied on the crew to report the contacts. I'll check the crew management and dive deeper then. I really dont fancy going out of tc often to manually listen. I slack-play most of the time, lurking about just waiting for a sonar contact and then go to action. cheers! .

I'm assuming you are not using RSRDC. I haven't seen a Liner in many, many hours of gameplay.

Correctly assumed, just 1.5 stock and RFB 2.0 and the later patch.. It was one of the old ones, not the huge european

After some more testing with the sonar issue. on different depths and such. I have noticed that sound contacts that i can hear loud and clear (And even see from periscope). Are totally invisible to my crewmen, even when at battlestations. At p-depth and i even went down to 40 meters, same result. My engines are off to assure no other noise. So i assume that the RFB crew if completely deaf . And i dont wanna pop out of TC every 2 minutes to make a manual sweep to see if there might be a target of opportunity on the way to my patrol area. Maybe i need to do a "take out earplugs" command or something, but i havent found it yet. Really, this cannot be the way its supposed to be, or? Realism is good, but babysitting and running the whole boat yourself is just silly
