Default I just learned a Lesson

I just did something I'll never do again.

Attack a convoy with a pregnant sea cow (Aka IXD2).
Extremely suicidal, the destroyer rammed me before I got under the water.

I'd love to hear details!
Date?
Day/Night?
Surface/Submerged?
Details on approach?

January 10th, 1943. 100% realism.
Was crossing the atlantic, just northwest of the where the bessel would be if it existed, on my way down to GG96.

Nighttime surface run, as I was hoping to slip in between the escorts.

The convoy was heading North Northeast, so I was coming in at South west, going in between the lead escort and the far east escort.

While getting into position and charting, at about 2500 M away from the fatty tanker I was following with a chart, a destroyer, (probably one in between the far east and the lead) comes into my blind spot at about 1000 M distance. I order a crash dive, and it took 45 seconds to get down. The destroyer nailed my conning tower, rendering everything there useless. Ash cans made quick work after that, with fuel tank leaking and electric motors shot.
Emergency surface, and a surrender later takes me to a prison camp.

Time to try again!

Yeah, I've heard he's aces at detecting incoming aircraft.

I've been trying to recruit him, but they keep telling me I can't. Something about him being American. And apparently still in grade school.

Hmmm. Night Surface Attack on a Convoy in 1943, eh?

Definately playing with fire there but, on a moonless night it's either that or, wait for some light for a Submerged Attack. One can easily get burned either way.
Just trying to hold contact in itself is dangeriouse in '43.

Sorry you lost your boat, and freedom.
On a more positive note, that IXD2 may have been what kept you alive long enough to blow ballast, and make it to the surface.
(All variations of Type IIs and VIIs are Single Hull Boats.
All variations of Type IXs and the two Type Is are Double Hull Boats.)

How do you surrender in SH3? If you come to the surface, don't they just blast you to smithereens? I don't see an abandon ship order.

You can't surrender. But I think with Sh Commander it'll deem it a surrender if you're surfaced when you die, or something. I don't remember the details.

Actualy . . . you don't.
Making it to the surface before being destroyed is just a "feel good" thing.
When you get there they still ram and gun you. No need to scuttle.

After your destroyed SH3 Commander (if your using it) will give you the option to change your demise to 'surrendered'.

Psha! When enemy ships see my lovely pregnant sea cow on radar, they think its a whale and run away. They don't want another Essex incident!
On another note/ bright side, I actually got torpedoes off at the tanker I was aiming at, fired a spread of 2, 1 hit and I got 10k tons. Another 10k ton career, woot!

Edit: Weird thing was, there were no planes attack me throughout the battle, until I resurfaced and surrendered.
I was right in range of British air bases, so I was slightly amazed.
