ARGH!
The night before the wife and I go on vacation, I thought I'd hop on SH4 and gets some relaxing time in by starting a new career. It'll give me something to look forward to when I get back home ![]() On Dec 11, 1941, just out of Manila, I run into one of the invasion forces that must have their eye on Luzon. I'm playing full realism, excepting the external camera (I like my eye candy). A bit of observation shows that the force is at a standstill, not moving. Just before I make my approach, one of the subchasers must've seen me, since he comes barreling in with two of his buddies. Thankfully, I was able to get deep enough and stay quiet enough. They go right over me, without so much as a single depth charge dropped. I slink away while they're busy searching. I creep towards the convoy, keeping an ear and an occasional eye on the subchasers behind me. 4,000 yards away from a still stationary large troop carrier, I note those aforementioned subchasers have given up and are returning to the rest of the targets. One of the has a bead right on me... and I'm sitting at periscope depth, waiting to get close enough to the troop carrier. SH4 starts putting out those little automatic pings... ... you know, the ones that aren't a "full lock", but just SH4 saying that if the subchaser was smart enough to ping, he might get something off of me. This automatic pinging whenever you happen to be "in the cone" bothers me. Sets my teeth on edge. I'd much prefer the subchaser only pinging if he suspects I'm there, not whenever the sim decides I'm in the right place to ping... ... anyway, I'm nervous at this point. It's a 4,000 yard shot in the middle of the daytime. That subchaser is on a rail, heading right towards me, but my silhouette shouldn't be enough for him to get a good ping return off of. On the other hand, the liner is stationary. I opt to make the shot. Four torp's, first has a one degree spread to the left, the other three spread to the right, 'til the last one is at one degree to the right. I figure that ought to be good enough if the liner decides to open 'er up. Just for giggles and eye candy, I follow the fish in after ordering 250' and a hard right rudder. 1,500 yards (roughly) from the liner, it decides to open the throttle up after presumably spotting the fish. This ~9,000 ton liner gets everything started quick enough so that every single torpedo misses... the last one on the right missed it by a good half length of the ship. I got so disgusted I just shut SH4 down. No save, no bother. |

Sounds like you need Webster's ship maneuvering fix. I hated having escorts go from 0 to 30 in 2.4 seconds

I have no problems with them. With M14's they have plenty time to evade. You shot a spread, which is good.. The ships do have some auto speed...Web's man fix..works pretty good, but be careful what mods you use it with. It's only going to work with the ships he programmed, so if you have ships not in his mod, they will react the same.
If you know it's stationary, don't use the spread control. Just unlock and take a bearing to hit right at the bow and then fire the others to hit. That should fix him into position so the others hit. Course you want to get close as you can. Obvious they will also turn, but the right spread will get them....That's why I love the M18's wakeless torps...get them when they become available. Course duds can ruin everything. Why ships will slow down to evade, they won't go in reverse. The same when targets are moving. If you shoot 3 at a ship going 9kts, he will usually slow down to 3kts when he see's the first one and turn, so after I shoot the first one, I'll slow the next one down, then the next one a lil more...course depends on other factors. Some prefer to shoot from the stern to the bow, because of turbo speeds I'll shoot bow to stern. |
