Default Lets hope for Salvation.

Lets hope for Salvation. And by salvation the freedom to mod this game to death, bury it with modding, and then dig it back up and revive it with modding! (No pun intende on how SH5 sounds like an RPG.)

I just came to the forums to check things out and so far I have learned about the 1943 end date.. Not so much of a big deal for me I don't think I ever got past 1943 in SH3 anyway.

The DRM is a concern though. Not too sure I like that Idea. Kinda derpressing really.

I will have to read more into it I guess. Having to have an internet connection to play sucks. Limits the game and the people that can buy it.

Now if it has a system like steam that you have an Offline mode then I guess thats better then nothing.

Man lot has happened in the last month.

"Mod friendly" is starting to sound like "friendly, but VERY particular about whom it will be friendly with."

i think that most of the modding that can be done is reserved to those who have the (higher)skills to do so.
minor "modding",like adding a coning tower emblem or music is for the majorety of the users.
ubisoft talks about adding the tools(or something like that,i remember to have read somewhere),hope we will be able to use them.

Lets just wait and see. i do not think that the need for an online connection is going to prevent modding - except whemn UBI is patchinmg something.

Savegames are storeed on the PC and on the Server, and on needs to be connected to the net.

nobody said thezy would check for modded files, or stop the game if you add 25 eels to your Type VII/a, because 11eels internal are just not enough for you.

How dare you rain on the parade of unbridled speculation based only tenuously on reality and fact?

in order to "update" your game UBI "must" read your game files

any files not "recognised" will be thought to be out of date and be replaced, which is the way it should be if you want software to work right.

changing these files with modding means there are going to be recognition issues that need to be overcome to avoid trashing mods.

UBI must first and formost make the game its first concern and customers mods will have to be considered last.

thats just how the setup works, now from that you must make your own assumptions as to weather mods will have issues.

from my standpoint i can only see mods not being overwritten if you only mod and save those mods online where the data base is and maybe just maybe it will have some intellegent AI ability to leave modded elements alone.

i'd imagine updates to the core game will mean that you must disable all your mods first, then update the game, and finally re-enable mods that are compatible with the new version of the core game. of course knowing what works will be a case of trial and error at least until the mod owner updates it to the new version.

There's plenty of way in which mods can be in the program directory and not screw anything up.

Having all the mod files in a Mod directory, when the game runs it checks for files in the Mod directory. If a file is present it uses it over the vanilla fine.

Medieval 2 Total War and to an extent ETW use that system and it works well enough allow you to have several mods installed without requiring separate installations for both. The game client can even check if any of these modified files are being used in multiplayer.

It is likely that modding will not take place until the patch/es have been released...otherwise there is little guarantee that said mod will be compatable with the latest patch.

Simply put....I wouldn't expect any significant modding work in the short term following release.

Jim is right on the money. For the most part, SH4 started with a few mods. Patches started to filter in. Some mods did not work but the originator of the mod would make it work. Countless restarts of careers with every patch. Eventually the patches stopped and the reall modding begins. Most play vanilla first and then add mods. So, in all reality a month or two before modders start plugging away at it. It will be small mods at first. Like interface lighting or button changes. Nothing drastic as RFB, GWX, TMO, OM and any others I have missed. Eventually it all comes together!
