With all of the drama currently going on in the Forum about the upcoming release of Silent Hunter V, some of which is valid and some of which is petulent nonsense and foot stamping, I'd just like to take a moment to say a big thank you to Dan, Mihai and the other Devs who have taken the time to visit and interract with this Forum on their own time over the years, when they are under no obligation to do so at all.
While some members here feel that they have the right to demand that certain things happen in the game and that they must be listened to, others here realize that while we have much to contribute, we are also lucky to have any access to the Devs at all, and that in the end we represent a small percentage of end users for the game, albeit a small percentage of end users who will play the game at a much higher level than any casual gamer. So, while we can debate whether more than one sub should have been included in the game, or whether the game should have ended in 1945 instead of 1943, there is no debate when it comes to the commitment that these Devs have demonstrated to the Silent Hunter franchise. Anticipating the usual 'fanboy' response to a post like this by those with room temperature IQs......guilty as charged if being a fanboy means appreciating that these guys continue to come here knowing that issues like the two I mentioned in this post are very contentious to the members here. A few here will not purchase Silent Hunter V because they are fundamentally unhappy with elements of the game. I respect that. Some others will claim that they are also not going to buy it, but in fact they will buy it as will the vast majority here. So, accepting that it is a one sub game that currently ends in 1943, I say 'bring it on' Devs. Let's see how well it plays and how modable it is. ![]() Last edited by TDK1044; 01-21-10 at 08:06 AM. |

Personally I think the one sub game is just dandy. Let's look at it from outside the box. When people speak of uboats what is the most popular boat or most recognizable to the common person? Why this of course:
![]() VII If that is in the game then great I say. It represents IMO all the uboats that participated. Neal made a good point concerning interior work and crew interaction. It is a different take on a subsim. I think SH3 is ingrained quite a bit and all other games will forever be compared to SH3 and that is shame really because the blinders are put on to something new and exciting. Furthermore, I believe the 'Das Boot' experience attempt is being accomplished here. Over the years the 'Das Boot' type experience was talked about at length. Well, here it is and there seems to be some discontent. Also, I have not heard anything about possible DLC. We experienced this with SH4 and the Uboat Mission. If there is DLC that adds a new U then great! It would seem this is how games are created these days. DLC comes later. There are numerous games that had paid DLC. Other than that, how often to you REALLY get to talk with a developer who has not only a desire to make the game but a passion for the subject matter? Not many that I can think of. Beating them about the head and neck is not warranted. This is their vision of SH5 and what it should be. I respect that and look forward to experiencing their vision for SH5. Thank gents, see you in March! ![]()

What those /\ guys said
![]() Furthermore, from what i saw of that last video, I got the impression that more time and attention was being spent on the nitty gritty details, rather than trying to model everything under the sun. Rather than model more than the VII, spend time getting the VII right. Rather than spend time implementing the Allied's advanced anti-sub equipment in the later years of the war, concentrate on the war up to '43. If SH5 does well financially, then we get to see more content. Sounds good to me. If it doesn't... well, the market (and Ubi) have spoken. I'm hoping the "promise" that the modders will be happy with SH5 will ring true, too. Look at what they've done with SH3 and SH4. If SH5 doesn't have more official content provided in the future, at least we'll still have the ability to mod it ourselves. |

well lets not forget its the entire "class" of type VII u-boats and not just one boat. there are several versions of that type VII class so when compared to the US fleetboats of sh4 which also didnt have many major changes between them untill the gato/balao then i would say you still have several subs to choose from within that one class of sub.
the simular versions of the fleetboats and the numerous type VII uboats of sh5 are IMO very much in line with each other and while having different class u-boats would have been nice too, i dont think anyone will feel like they dont have a choice of boat to use with that boats individual own differences oh and by the way its perfectly reasonable to be unreasonable as long as the reason you are being unreasonable is a reasonable one ![]() |

I've gone on record as saying I'll buy it but won't play it until I can play in a Type II. The truth is, if I can get a computer that will run it I'll certainly give it a good once-over to see if I might like it. After all, I played Silent Service for a good long time, and it had only the Gato and no campaign to speak of at all - just driving around the Pacific looking for things to sink. It was very random though.
I can fully understand why some people want the full-war extension and all the different types of boats. I can also understand why those things aren't in this base game. Dan & Co. have worked hard and long to give us a game/sim they think we will like. The least we can do is respect that effort and find out for ourselves how good or bad it really is before we consign them to the nether regions. @ WEBSTER: I'm reasonably certain that I'm not being unreasonable when I say that that is one of the most reasonable statements I've had reason to read recently. Reasonable enough?
