Default New to SH4

Hi Everyone.

I have played SH3 a lot but now I am trying SH4. Just installed it from the disc. Can anyone recommend some mods and tweaking for this sim? I have been reading the forums and the modern subs look awesome. Unfortunately I cannot really understand the abbreviations like RMO etc so not sure exactly how to crack on or what I should have. Any help and assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Welcome Aboard!
I'm new too... but I'll help with the ones I hear about most. I'm sure others here will be able to give deeper insight than me.

TMO = Trigger Maru Overhaul. This is a "super-mod" that changes a LOT of stuff (for the better) both graphically and gameplay-wise. Think of it as a free expansion pack.

RFB = Real Fleet Boat. Another super-mod. As far as I can tell, you should only use one super-mod at a time to prevent conflicts. I haven't tried RFB, so I don't know anything about it

RSRDC = Run Silent Run Deep Campaign. This changes up the missions to make them more historically accurate (no more sneaking into an enemy harbor to drop off a spy.)

JSGME = JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler = A must-have if you're going to play with mods. This program is what you use to install mods. It's great because you don't have to go in and manually backup and replace files, this program does all that for you. And when you want to uninstall a mod, it's just as easy.

Those are the major ones I know of. Keep in mind when you're installing mods with JSGME, that the most recent one on your list will over-write any conflicting files with mods that were previously installed (unless you tell it not to, but things could get messy if you don't keep track of it... easer to plan the order of installation). So, you typically want to install your super-mod first, then any applicable patches, then campaign mods and any applicable patches, then any other little mods last (this is a guideline, not a hard-fast rule).

I run TMO, and RSRDC and install them in that order. When I use JSGME to activate the RSRDC, I get a warning telling me that TMO has already changed files, do I want to overwrite them? I say yes. Don't worry, if you go back later and de-activate the 2nd mod, the first mod is returned to where it was, so nothing is permanently changed/overwritten. I have a couple other little mods that I install afterwards.

Hope this helps.

Good answer from Jerm.
Also, you may want to check this thread out
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=155786
About half way down the first post you will find the Large Super Mod Section, with links.
Check out each supermod link, it will give you a rundown of what to expect with each one.
And welcome aboard

Default Still Seem To Be Having Problems

Hi All,
I still seem to be having some teething problems here or I am doing something wrong. When I load a nuke boat November or Los Angeles the game crashes to desk top. When i take them back out the game runs fine. Is there something that I am not doing or something I am doing wrong. I am running Vista and SH4 from a proper bought disc.
Any assistance very much appreciated. Not sure but I may have wrote this in wrong area.

I don't have any experience using the nuke boats, bit I'm pretty sure they are incompatible with the large super mods.
Are you trying to run them on top of TMO or RFB?

Just thought of something.
Is your game patched, and to what level (1.4 or 1.5)?
Maybe these boats were written for a particular patch?

Where did you get them?
I'll download them and have a look over them. I've got nothing else doing this afternoon.

This is where the subs are. I downloaded a patch v1.5, I presume it was a clean one but it keeps sending my anti virus mad. Besides not sure how to use the patch. Sorry for being a novice lol and a pain.

When you say you DL patch 1.5..was that for the game itself. It's really an add on that you pay for called Silent Hunter Gold Uboats. Just concerned what patch you're talking about and if you have the right one?
If you just have the base game..Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific, you can patch up to 1.4.

Some of those boats work with mods, some with stock 1.4 or 1.5. You really have to pay attention to the readme's included in the support dir with each mod..Most give details, some don't, so be careful.

Just had a PM conversation with Geordie.
He's patched to 1.4, which is why these nuke boats didn't work.
I've pointed him in the direction of the U Boat expansion disk to get 1.5.
