Default probably a stupid question on saving games

I've been reading a lot of material - SH3 manual, GWX manual, SH3 Commander manual, this forum, etc.... But somehow I still have not found a way to save the game mid-patrol and exit the game without using SAVE, then ALT-F4. Every time I try to save and exit, my career is left back in port with the patrol being over.

Is this possible without ALT-F4?

Thanks! I'm sure the answer has been hiding right in front of my eyes.

For some reason, you have to select "save" and then reselect it again.

Ah, so I can save the game, then hit save again for an option to exit? I'll give that a try. Thanks irish1958!

For what it's worth, when I select SAVE, then SAVE again, all I can do is just make a new save game. I don't see any option to just EXIT right here. Anytime I exit, it require me to choose CONTINUE or RETURN TO BASE. So no matter what I do, SH3 Commander assumes I'm back in base. Yet if I SAVE and then ALT-F4, SH3 Commander shows that I'm mid-patrol, at sea.

What am I missing here? Am I supposed to simply delete those auto-saves which occur when I exit the game? Or exit in a different way where it doesn't insist on me RTBing?

Thanks!

In game, there's an option (Esc button) to 'Save and Exit'. Select that option. Type in your name, or however you want it saved as, and select save. It will say something like 'gamed saved' and return you to a screen that will allow you to 'Exit to Main Menu'. Select 'main menu', and from there 'Exit Game'.

That's what I was going to say: Esc, then 'Save and Exit'. I've never heard of any "Alt+F4" thing.

Alt+F4 is just a Windows command to immediately quit an application. So it serves the purpose of forcing SH3 to quit without auto-saving (after Saving manually mid-patrol). Somehow I never noticed Save & Quit -> Exit to Menu (or whatever it says) because it looks so similar to the others which only have the option to Return to Base or Dock at Kiel etc.

Now I see it (I knew it was hiding in plain sight).

Thanks!

One step at a time jimbuna. My first captain is laying at the bottom of the North Sea with 26 crew after his third patrol upon tangling with a Destroyer. That was a simple oversight of the fact that the Destroyer was probably sitting right there the whole time watching me while I sat hunched over a map plotting a cargo intercept in rough seas at night. My second is so far fairing much better as he can at least can go to sleep now while on patrol!
