SH3 On Windows 7

Ive recently switched to a computer with windows 7, I used to love playing SH3 but now I get a compatibility error that pops up when I attempt to run the game. It says "This application can be launched with a release version of Microsoft windows 95/98/2000/xp only.
Ive tried running the program in compatibility mode in 2000, xp sp2, xp sp3, vista, everything.
Ive searched everywhere I can think of and Ive yet to solve the problem, ive ran a 1.4b patch but for some reason the installer says it patched it from 1.0 to 1.3. If anyone could help you would be my weekly hero Please help, I just wanna play my game.

I run mine on win7 and everything is fine, it might be DRM related. Or Starfire or whats it called.
Then again i remember having that installer bug in XP aswell, i had my version off steam which didnt work and decided to just buy one of those patched to 1.4 cheap resells off Ebay.
Lets hope someone can help you better then i can :P

I was actually considering buy a steam copy of it but now that you said it didnt work you saved me a few bucks, the wierdest thing is that the 1.4b patch says that it is updating the game from 1.0 to 1.3, when IMO it should be updating it to 1.4b.

I have the same problem, did anyone find a solution?
SH4 runs fine but just isn't sh3 with GWX...
BTW, running the 64 bit version of win7, could this be the problem?

Edit: "ive ran a 1.4b patch but for some reason the installer says it patched it from 1.0 to 1.3", this is a known issue and just a typo in the installer. You have been upgraded to 1.4.

Well my problem is windows 7 wont work. First it wouldn;t run at all so i got a no cd crack. This loads the start screen and the nice sub coming out of the mist screen. But when I get the red "loading line" it gets to the end and boom CTD! I hate windows 7 and Ubisoft.
My version is the 1.0 Dvd original so I guess no starfish or what ever its called and i have updated to 1.4. I have tried every recommended solution on these forums and nothing works.

My system is:
Intel i5 Quad
Windows 7 (not upgrade)
64-bit
6 GB Ram
Geforce GTS 240 1Gb

Ok I got SH3 / GWX 3 to run on my windows 7 (64 bit) system.

Here's how I did it, not all steps I took may be necessary but this is what worked for me so I'll stick to it.

I don't think I have the starforce DVD, but installed the "certain software" anyway.

I ran the setup.exe on the DVD in compatibility mode Win XP SP3.

I did not install to the default location but to a different drive.(D)

Than ran the 1.4b patch setup.exe in compatibility mode Win XP SP3 and ran it as administrator.

Than I copied certain software that will remove the starforce (as she-wolf suggested) to the installation directory.

Installed GWX 3, compatibility mode Win XP SP3 and ran it as administrator.

To start the game I run SH3.exe in compatibility mode Win XP SP3 and run as administrator.

All works fine now, including SH3 commander and the resolution fix.

BTW, what a joy to play sh3 on my new pc, loading times are 25% compared to my old system.

This notice comes up because of the copy protection on the disk. As soon as you have installed, not launching the game first, you need to install the patch ( which is the correct one despite the spurious message) and then run certain software that will remove the starforce. I fear it is verboten to say what it is on here, so google it. It replaces several key files in the games folder. That should get you going unless (like me) you have other problems as well.
