FYI

Tiger direct has 9600GT video cards with one gig of ddr3 ram starting
at $79.00 u.s dollars.(as of 12-15-09)cant beat that and there great cards for the money..orderd me one for the upcomeing silent hunter5..also for fallout 3 I got my daughter for chirstmas.Kinda nice when ur kids want toys for chirstmas that dad wants to play too..hehe..even though it cost me a new CPU(athlon64x2 5200) and video card(radeon HD 4670 1gig ddr3) for her PC so she could play it..Its funny because she liked fallout 3 on xbox360 but when she relized all the mods they have for the PC version she wanted it for PC..

for those interested....

Just tested EVGA GT220(non OC"d) with one gig DDR3 on silent hunter4 max settings on 37 inch Lcd tv at 720P(1280x768)..Ran smooth as silk..Did not slow down or lag at all....Of course that 9600GT I orderd is alot faster...

For about a $100,- you have an 9800GT, which is quite literally twice the card as a 9600GT.

/smartass

* well make that 100-120 USD

agreed the 9800 is sooo much more than the 9600 and only a couple dollars more but the 250 cards are better than the 9800 so if you can get your hands on one try the gts 250 before you decide

i would suggest to anyone wanting a good quality card with medium high performance to get a gts250 or go for the ATI 5770 if you want dx11 but the 5770 costs about $170

the gts250 are all around $100 and some can go up to $135 which is about the same exact price you pay for the 9800

Those cards are inexpensive. Back when SH4 was released I wasn't ready to go PCI-E and wanted to wring alittle more out of my rig.

Two days before my pre-order SH4 arrived at the door my PNY 7600GT 512mb AGP card arrived. $155.00

I cry alittle everytime I think about it.

Sir Darone999, might i ask, do you know what wattage your power supply unit is rated? ie 400watt 650watt etc, you must take into consideration when buying mid to high end cards, ones power consumption as the larger and higher spec cards draw more power. just a point to note. thakyou

I got a 550 watt psu with the power cable for video card...I new when I bought the psu I would in the future buy a video card that would need the power cable from the psu..

here is a great link to calculate your power supply needs....

yeah the 9800 series is a great video card..as is the GTS250 both are faster cards..Watch out for the cheap ones. though you dont want DDR2 memory..try to pay a little more for DDR3 or GDDR3 memory...if your on a budget your better off with 512meg of DDR3 than 1gig of DDR2..MY old 8600GT has done so well in part because it had DDR3 memory..and of course the card OC'd so well too..anyways here is a great link so you can review charts and see how well different video cards test on games and other software..

Dont take this the wrong way but there are those like me here who thirty dollars may be the breaker on getting a new card or not for silent hunter five..I make good money but I am also a single father with two daughters in school..Trust me girls are not cheap..The 9600GT will run new games medium to high settings at a decent framerate..I do agree the 9800GT and GTS250 are faster but not that much more faster....

A 9600GT at $79.00 is a much better deal than 9800GT at $110.00..your paying thirty dollars more for a video card that gets about mabey ten frames per second faster on games such as fallout three...While the 9800GT is faster it is no where near twice as fast as the 9600GT...The same applies to the GT250..U have to go GTX280 and above to double the 9600GT framerate..Remember dont confuse factory overclock when looking at frame rates...U could compare a 9600GT not overclocked from the factory to a 9800GT overclocked from the factory and think your getting a card thats much faster..But if you overclock the 9600GT its not that much of a gap in speed (framerate)....Here is framerates from fallout3 and below a link to the whole chart...

Fallout 3

Fraps/TH-Savefile Tenpenny (1680x1050, 4AA, 8AF, Very High Quality)

Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT
  • (512 MB)
Framerate 53.60

Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT
  • (1024 MB)
Framerate 49.60

Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT
  • (512 MB)
Framerate 49.50

These are base 9600GT and 9800GT cards No OC or SLI...As you can see the 9800GT is slightly faster..this holds true in all charts..The point being if ur on a budget the 9600GT will play any game on medium to high setting just fine...

I know mate, just saying if you can afford it, go higher.

Say what you will about framerates, but fact is a 9800GT has almost twice the processors. That won't double performance, but it sure makes a difference. Keep in mind different cards perform different in every game, even on different settings for that game. A comparison of 1 game, run on 1 setting tells you nothing.

That chart is deceptive, as always; I can run F3 maxed out (not just very high, maxed). A 9800GT could do it too, but not without framerates below 25. A 9600GT would simply crap itself and put out a slideshow or not run it at all.

Agree..if u got the cash get something good..I would love to get two GTX295's and SLI them...that would be sweet...My post about the 9600GT was aimed at those who want to play silent hunter 5 and are worried they cant afford a card to run it at a decent pace..I bet after christmas u could get one for $69.00 U.S dollars or less..I orderd one the other day with 1gig GDDR3 for $79.00.I plan on OC it to the max like my old 8600GT...Just got through playing crysis on all gamer settings with 2xAA with a GT220(OC to 720mhz) 1gig ddr3 on 37inch 720p(1280x768) lcd flat screen tv.. it ran like a charm no lag at all..I was surprised how well it did..anyways have a good day...

295 in SLI would be nice, yeah.

I think we agree the message is "get something that fits your budget, look for the bang for buck". Let's leave it at that then.
