Default The most dangerous mission i ever survived!

I just spent 4 hours on a Photo Recon mission to Hiroshima Harbor. My first mission of a new campaign aboard the USS Shark. It went smoothly until i was almost there, then as i was approaching the final narrows toward the Harbor a convoy passed overhead and the 3 destroyers that were escorting it detected me. Luckily there is a deep hole there, i ordered silent running, then all stop and put the boat down to 290ft (Just about 10ft from the bottom!) and for over an hour the Japs depth charged the area. I lost count of how many they dropped, most were a good distance away but two of them damaged the AA and Deck Gun.

Finaly they gave up and moved on, i continued to the harbor at periscope depth and when i raised the scope i was disapponted to see that none of the ships docked there were triggering the camera. Then i decided to see what else was around, almost directly behind me was a Hiryu Fleet Carrier! It triggered the camera so i took its picture, spun around and sent 4 fish towards it, 4 direct hits! 1 less Jap Flattop to worry about! PING!!! A Mutsuki Destroyer i hadn't noticed before was coming in fast, 2 fish from the stern tubes and he was no longer a problem. Then i notced that in the Harbor right next to Hiroshima harbor was a Fuso Battleship at anchor. It took 6 torpedos and settled to the bottom.

I decided i had enough fun and it was time to go, so i plotted the course back the way i came in. Right in the middle of the deep hole i'd hid in on the way in was another Mutsuki playing possum. Fired my last 2 foward torpedos at him and as they were closing in, he went to full ahead and dodged them and the search light started scanning the water. He spotted my scope and charged in as i turned my stern to him. At 700 yards i fired my last 2 fish and both struck home. Whew!

Lookouts spotted more warships ahead so i had to plot another path out. I passed through a narrow waterway and out into bungo suido and spotted a lone merchant. Decided to take him out with the recently repaired deck gun. Only problem was as soon as i fired on him, he fired back! Quickly ordered a crash dive and kept firing until i was forced inside. A few hits, but not enough to sink him and he sailed away as i headed for the open ocean.

After a mostly uneventful crossing i docked back at Midway and was awarded a Bronze Star. It was the Most Fun i've had yet! I usually skip these missions and i figured it was a suicide mission when i left port (and it almost was), but its a great feeling to actually pull it off!

So what are some of your best missions?

EDIT: Rearranged the order of the attacks on the Mutsuki and Fuso. I was writing from memory and got it mixed up LOL!

My best missions?

The ones where I don't end up like O 19.

Nice mission, did you take pics after hitting the CV?

Some guys don't like the photo recon missions but I do, something different and a nice way to fatten up the old tally sheet.

I always show the boys back at base the pics they want to see but tell them no to worry and show the after shots.

I Didn't have time to convert these to jpgs yesterday, but here they are..

before...

After...

The Fuso...

I hate the Jammed Dive Planes Bug!!

The funny thing was i didn't have one dud on that mission, but the next mission about half of my torps either exploded early or were just duds.

I'm using a stock install with alot of TMO graphics and features and a few aircraft from OM and a few other mods. Still have some minor debugging to do, but its working pretty well so far!

My closest call was on a harbor mission, forget which one.

I was on my way out when 2 destroyers and a sub chaser trapped me in a small cove, very shallow water.

I lined up on the lead destroyer, hitting him with a bow shot. He settled in the mud with his stern sticking out of the water. I tried another shot at the sub tender but missed--no time for another one--what to do??

Looking around, I got a crazy idea... I hauled tail--I mean redeployed--towards my sunken foe and took shelter under his, ah ,stern. Yep, pretty snug there but more than enough room for my scope. I kept going forward and reverse as needed to keep my boat in place.

The japs hated this game! They circled and kept firing at my scope but couldn't make a run on me.

Long story short I picked off both with three torpedoes. After that it was dark and my crew and I sailed around a while charging our batteries. There was no one left to contest it in that area. Later we dove and slipped on out to sea past 2 more destroyers.

I hoped they liked their pictures, almost cost me my boat and crew.
