Default Some questions about what destroyers can hear

I'm using DWX3 and I'd like to know some things about how the destroyer passive sonar is modeled.

I know that the destroyer aspect is modeled, so that they cannot hear in the rear for about 45 degrees to each side of their stern.

But can they hear you while depth charges are exploding?

Does the noise from other ships around affect what they can hear? Can I go faster in the middle of a convoy rather than alone in the ocean or does it not matter at all?

Is "silent running" a very big difference from normal running as long as your speed is say, 1 kt in both cases?

Yes they can hear you, Depth charges in SH3 don't blind the sensors of destroyers while they explode.

Unfortunately no, this is not modeled either, each ship produces its own sound which is detected individually by each destroyer. So you cannot mask your own sound by hiding in the sound of another vessel.

Yes it does make an appreciable difference. Silent running orders the crew to stop working on noise making activities such as damage repair, pump operation, and weapons loading.

in game, this does reduce your sound signature by a fair margin.

the tactic to go as deep as possible, to make a silent run, to flank when the DC explode, to go back to silent run when the explosions stop, to change course once in a while, would the community say this is a good solution in evading DDs?

I tried that only once so far, but it was in early 1940 so I don't know if this will do me good later on as well ......

Yes, those are your basic, bread-and-butter evasive maneuvers.

In my experience, at least early war (Up to 1942) if you can get down to 160 meters or lower on silent running, you're fairly safe.

Silent runing definatly will help you in your evasion as I relearned last night out side of Gibralter. I forgot to switch over to SR when the escorts of the convoy I was aiming to say hi to decided to have some fun with me. I didn't last long.

Going deep seting SR when you are there, and then blasting Flank speed when the charges go off and then back down to SR has worked for me in the past. I don't know weather or not the DC blind sensors or not, so I will have to take the other guys word for it, but when the DD makes its run by the time the first charge goes off you are generaly behind the ship and as such out of the range of thier ASDIC. If there are other ships in the hunting group they may pick up your signiture if they are set up for a run but chanses are good that they will still be making their turn to make the next run and might miss you as they tend to stack up fairly tightly when they have decided to DC an area.

Just remember: Be more Agressive, unless they might kill you then run and hide like a little girl.

By the way, if after several hours of depth-charging you notice the escorts above are still circling around, but have stopped dropping ashcans, it's possible they've run out of charges.

Another trick is to try and gues if the DD is making a circle left or right. If you do it correct, for example he goes left and you right, the basis for an escape is made. Inch by inch you leave him circling around a void.
