Default I appologize because I was wrong ... I was ignorant

I have made a big mistake when I made a new thread claiming the bearing overlay on the nav and attack charts was improperly sized as a layer before applying. I was trying every resolution in the options menu and playing the game, and every resolution showed the same thing, which was the 3000 yard bearing plotter measuring out to 3850yds. MY MISTAKE IN THAT I FINALLY LEARNED YESTERDAY THAT WHEN YOU CHANGE RESOLUTIONS "YOU MUST EXIT THE GAME AND RESTART FOR THE NEW RESOLUTION TO TAKE EFFECT" I was changing in game and going back in game to check again without exiting and restarting.
I was dummer than a box of rocks. There were a few courteous replies to my post when I bet there were hundreds of you folks wanting to jump down my throat for critizing a flaw in design where there was none. Thank-You for being reserved and and not hammering me.
If the resolution was changing in game, without exiting the game to lock in the new setting, as I believed, my logic and explanation would have beeen accurate.
I share now some observations I think may be helpful. These apply to me and my monitor. I use a 22" LCD and the resolution is set at 1680x1050 which is the native resolution for my monitor and which I use for all my activities.
1680x1050 game setting is the ONLY one that displays perfectly round graphics in the game. I used for comparison the round gages in the game as well as the magnifier on the chart table. The best comparison was checkiing the "ROUND" periscope. All other resoutions display an oval that is wide on the sides with the exception of 1600x900 being the only resolution that is also oval but taller than wide and also the only setting that is a 16:9 aspect ratio. My 1680x1050 is an 8:5 ratio. Other available game settings are 4:3, 5:4, and 8:5.
ROCKIN ROBBINS told me a week ago that the overlay measures 3000 yards as it should and is perfect on his computer. He told me the game was designed for a resolution of either 1280x960 or 1280x1024. AT THOSE RESOLUTIONS THE OVERLAY IS PERFECTLY ACCURATE FOR BOTH THE 1500 AND 3000YD OVERLAYS. I spent a week changing "IN GAME RESOLUTIONS WITHOUT EXITING THE GAME AFTER EACH CHANGE."
ROCKIN ROBBINS is absolutely right and I was the dummy.
The plotter will measure accurately at only those two resolutions as that is the game design. I am playing at 1680x1050 because I prefer ROUND and my plotter although also round measures out to 2300yd. I have chosen to manually measure distance anyway. I know the edge of my plotter is 2300 yards and if I target is inside the circle my sweat increases. I enjoy the plotter as an indispensable bearing reference.
I will add the followiing measurements for comparison and would not mind any feedback on your observations as pertaining to your monitor screen size and the aspect ratio you use. Aspect ratio is listed next to the resolution in the options menu.
22" lcd monitor set at native 1680x1050 w/ 8:5 aspect ratio displays round images and measures the 3000yd overlay at 2300yds.
11024x768 4:3 measures 3850yds. 1152x864 4:3 measures 3400yds. 1280x960 4:3 measures 3000yds. 1280x1024 5:4 measures 3000yds.
1600x900 16:9 measures 2400 yds------ and is the only res displaying a tall oval. ALL other res display a wide oval.
1440x900 8:5 measures 2700 yds.
Again, I use 1680x1050 8:5 aspect on my 22" rectangle monitor and measure 2300 yds. In my cas it is the ONLY res that displays round objects correctly. I also notice that at other res all objects are wide that they should be and saw some where the TDC starts infringing on the perisope view as all objects are wider also.
Thank you for not jumping all over me and being reserved. I learned a lot about display properties at different resolutions along with learning how to set the res in the game by remembering to close down the game after each setting so that you do not go through each setting as I did measuring 3850 yds "knowing" every one else is crazy and learning I was the dumb one because of operator error.
ON THE LIGHT SIDE:
I am old and retired and this is the first computer game I have ever played, being old Navy myself. I love it and only been at it a week and a half. I have a lot of learning to do, as I served on a tin can DD883. The nav part is easy for me, but driving a sub in wartime, Oh my Lord. I have been playing with some fun mods just playing around getting familiar with the game. Two nites ago before I got my ass kicked I loaded up with ROCKIN ROBBINS torpedo, shot only one torpedo at a surfaced enemy sub, the sub came totally out of the water as high as it was long, nose high, twisted and turned like a king salmon and croaked. Another surface ship I hit did 3 barrel rolls.......
Time for me to do a few more quick ones, get serious then onto a serious patrol. I already tried one of those and at the end the game Which was an hour showed me a green medal they posthumously sent my wife telling her about the hero I was to save her from the truth. I have been doing a lot of reading from your site also learning what I can.
My wife and I drove 100 miles to Seattle today, never a problem, but I looked at her and told her I felt safer and more secure in my submerged submarine............Doug
PS: I am impressed with the knowledge and expertise I see on the site in a lot of areas. Keep up the good work. If a sub gets stolen from the pier in Bremerton, I know where the authorities can find some skillful and qualified sub commanders.......

I went through much the same as you and I still have a plotter that doesn't measure right for the same reasons you do. I just live with it as you are.

Some times us old "box of rocks" can get lost in something new. No problem.

Get use to the green medals, you'll no doubt see many more of them. I have.

Be careful what you say to the wife else she thinks your crazy, which you will become if you play long enough.

Rockin Robins has some fun stuff but also some very useful tutorials.

Good luck and good hunting.

Magic

its no big deal, we all make mistakes and many of us have forgotten to exit and recheck things which is an easy thing to forget.

very few people are man enough to admit they made a mistake and weather they are right or wrong, even fewer are ever willing to appologize.

ps - a few spaces between paragraphs would make you post easier to read by the way
